"I'm not young enough to know everything." ~ J.M. Barrie

How nice that you made it to this Daily Field Note! It is already the 171th edition where we put great posts from the last day(s) in the spotlight. This way you can easily find articles worth reading and authors get more of the exposure they deserve.

Geopolis is a community that promotes and connects people who are interested in fields of "global" sciences. These are the sciences that deal with planet earth and the interesting interactions taking place on it. Although just as fascinating, they do not always fit in the categories of "STEM". Here at Geopolis they are the corner stone of the community.

How to get your post in this selection? You do not have to be a member for your post to get featured in the Daily Field Notes. Just write your post with the #geopolis tag, or one of the other featured tags: #Geography - #Geology - #Ecology - #Archeology - #Anthropology - #History

If you want to support this curation effort, consider joining our fanbase or our curation trail to automatically support similar authors like the ones in this posts. These are two things you can do using "SteemAuto"

Geography: INTRODUCTION TO CARTOGRAPHY - DASYMETRIC MAPPING

Original post by @lordneroo

Hello everyone How are you doing today? I hope everything's fine. Everything is going great as far as I am concerned, only problem is I have been quite busy lately. This is also the main reason why I haven't published another part of this series in the last twenty days, so here I am to make it up to you. Let's waste no more time and get this started As promised in a previous regarding the elements of Chloropleth mapping, this time we will move on to the next category of thematic maps, which are broadly known as Dasymetric maps. We are going to el...

Geology: My Faults: A Journey Along the Pacific and North American Plates, Part 1 of 3 (Alaska to Haida Gwaii)

Looking at a large map, most earthquake faults make sense. They are the boundaries between continent blocks, nature's version of borders. They are cracks between the big plates beneath our feet, tectonic plates that move endlessly over the molten core of the earth. Where these plates collide, slip, and slide beneath one another, we get seismic activity like earthquakes and volcanoes. Even in the middle of plates, where there are thin spots in the earth's crust, events can occur. But most big seismic action happens along the periphery where plates come together. Over the last 10 years or so, I've become fascinated by this geology. If I'm honest, then 'worried' might be a better word, ...

History: Mother Earth isn't always so nice: When All Life Almost Died 252 Million Years Ago

Original post by @anzha

In the old mythologies, there are often two companions who created the world and/or were parents to the gods that followed. Often the father was associated with the sky and the mother with the world or Earth. Earth Mother, Mother Earth or even Mother Nature all stem from this basic memetic ancestry. In recent years though, Mother Nature has been portrayed as a loving, caring maternal figure. This is probably because much of life has become so tame, at least in the natural sense, compared to what our ancestors faced. Few of us, at least in the West, have to ...
