Grown ups (film): just shows Sandler can make money with anything

in #getyerlearnon6 years ago

While i don't necessarily think it is Sandler's fault, this movie is just bad - and when i say bad i mean it isn't funny.

This just seems like the usual Sandler charity benefit for all his pals who can't seem to pull of movies on their own. Sandler doesn't need them in order to make money but as is typical he is always injecting the usual suspects as his co stars. I guess that is pretty awesome for him as a pal, but that doesn't mean that the film is going to be any good.

I realize that this is an adult "coming of age" type movie which probably reflects how Sandler and his buddies (and really anyone who goes through mid-life) feel when we see ourselves transition and reluctantly must grow up.

A lot of the jokes are what would be described as toilet humor, and i'm not gonna say that Sandler definitely shouldn't do that, because it is kind of a big part of what makes him who he is. The script is pretty dumb and most of the jokes aren't funny.

Regardless of how I feel about it - or essentially anyone else in the professional critic world feels, this film made over 200 million dollars and I can't help but just shake my head in disbelief that this is possible. As i have said many times before, all of Sandler's movies, including the abhorrent Jack and Jill make tens to hundreds of millions of dollars and his attempts at any other formula (which are far better movies) routinely make very little or actually lose money.

I would consider this one of the largest flops in the comedy genre when you consider the star power that it contained. I will give a few points because there are occasional chuckle moments and I dig David Spade. However, that's about all i can do.

"A lot of the jokes are what would be described as toilet humor"

I actually like toilet humor, it's nearly always funny cos it annoys "grown-ups", and done well, it's hilarious. This is because everything that is base, but humans want to pretend isn't happening, is funny. Laziness is funny, fat people eating is funny, and farting when you want to hold it in is funny, and laxative jokes are often the funniest of all, cos you are forcing someone to be base who doesn't want to be: the Turbolax stuff in "Dumb and Dumber" has never been beat.

The best toilet humor can make careers (think Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids) but when that's ALL there is, in terms of jokes, it demonstrates that absolutely nobody had any good ideas about what to do with a movie. Cos toilet humor is always the easiest stuff to write. A funny plot is much harder. And this movie has NO real plot. They just all got together and thought that if you put comedians together, the result is automatically "Caddyshack." Well, no, that movie had a proper plot: ie posh people vs crass people on a golf course. Here, there is no plot mechanism to reliably drive the laughs, just them all coming together for a vacation.

They are all so pleased with themselves that the whole thing is off-puttingly SELF-CONGRATULATORY, which is the worst. When movie characters seem happier than the audience, it is painful.

What a waste of Kevin James! What a waste of Chris Rock! All Kevin James gets to do is "be fat," and all Chris Rock gets to do is, well, nothing.

So I'm with you on this one. The audience was willing to pay a fortune to see this, and it made a ton of money, but it's a goddamn embarrassment. :(

I totally agree with you. I don't think I really like any of his movies mainly because I don't find them funny.
One of my favorite moves with him was the "Click" movie but it wasn't really a comedy movie.
But even though every time Sandlers movie comes out, I always have my hopes high and think this one looks funny, but I always get disappointed.

Agree, one of those movies where they put few funny moments into trailer and that pretty much it.

Thanks for letting us know about this film

The problem is that the absurd situations posed in this film most of the scenes take away weight from this intention.

A movie where I seriously never laugh, not even a chuckle. Like you said, amazing that it raised so much money, I guess maybe it's funny for kids or something

Comedy movie.............@gooddream

"Grown ups" is a film-atmosphere. He does not pretend to the original story, to some kind of exclusivity of humor, in general to comedy. It's not a drama, it's not a romantic comedy, it's not a melodrama, it's not a movie, it's an atmosphere. The atmosphere of friendship, rest, love, family and self-determination, both for the characters of the film, and for the viewer. There is an indistinct, weak outset, and the plot, the culmination and denouement are completely absent. But strangely enough, this does not prevent you from plunging into viewing, as if into warm lake water and swinging on its waves, just contemplating.
Each of us had a childhood, everyone had friends. Someone has kept this jewel, but someone has lost forever. But, I'm sure, everyone has exceptional, their own and warm memories of friends, joint tricks, dreams, your friendship.
After watching this movie, I want to call friends, I want to arrange a holiday and call everyone and tell my friends how dear they are to you and how sorry that adult life separates us for a long time. After all, the most important thing in our life is people who surround you, whom you love, and who love you equally much the way you were and how you became!
