Hash House Harriers: Week 4

in #getyerlearnon5 years ago

If you are in an area that has an active HHH you really should get involved. This is an international group of people that get together for what appears to be simply the love of getting together.

Have you ever found youself in a new city looking for people to see and things to do? Well we all have to move sometimes and that Hash House Harriers make that so much easier.

This latest trek was 7 km in the jungle far to the north of Chiang Mai. We didn't know anything about the run beforehand (as is the rule) execpt that at the end we would be drinking beer with one another (and this happens on every hash, everywhere in the world)

Today's trip started out like any other: We were heading into the woods with no real idea where we were going. We just knew it was going to be long.

Like any hash, you have to work as a team to figure out where you are supposed to go next. This particular one was especially good because there were lots of "circle checks"

when a circle check is discovered, it means that the path continues somewhere within 100 meters of where the circle is. It could be anywhere. The team needs to investigate in every direction keeping in mind that (just like on an airplane) that the path could likely be behind you.

some people get hurt

At the end of all this teamwork nonsense there is a circle of booze awaiting and that is really what the Hash House Harriers are all about. This particular Hash also has ice blocks that people will need to sit on to be interrogated about whatever

since I am new, i get interrogated a lot

All in all, the HHH might just be the best group of people in the world. They are a global establishment of "drinkers with a running problem" and i really look forward to meeting with them every week. Plus, if you are lucky there might be a doge-friend there as well... such as this lovely lady

If you are alive..... and you would like to meet more people....and you enjoy a beer or two; I strongly suggest you immediatly check to see if your area has a Hash House Harriers and sign up immediately. These guys (and girls) welcome anyone who isn't a complete a-hole (and some who are) and you will not regret it. It is a not-for-profit organization and they are truly just a wonderful group of people.

That is really cool. I notice that a lot of people are wearing things on their legs around their ankles. Is that a fashion statement or is it because you were going off running in the jungle and they didn't want to get bit by anything? It looks like there used to be a group in the city near me, but they haven't updated their info since around 2010, so I don't know if they are still active. I am not anywhere near being ready to run anyway, so I guess it isn't a huge deal :)

the things around the legs are because sometimes we are walking or running through brush and there are things that cut your legs in those situations. I know this first hand because I have been cut multiple times because I don't wear them.

There are many places that don't have an active Hash because it does take some level of organization in order to establish these things... the main part being that you need to have permission to use the land and someone (called the Hare) has to go out there and plan the trek in the morning... the paths are never the same twice and this keeps it interesting.

That makes sense, there are some areas where I can see them doing this but you are right the restrictions on where you can and can't walk in some of the parks proabably make it difficult. I can see them doing these on private property with permission or state forest land.

It's odd how we get away with it because we are normally on privately owned land and are basically trespassing everywhere we go. However, i don't think that the Thai farmers really think that a group of 50 mostly foreign people who are over 40 running around is really much of a threat :)

No probably not. Quite the difference from over here where people will shoot you just for looking at them wrong!

Quite an interesting group...never a bad idea meeting up new people....even though I'll pass on the beer

there are a number of people that don't drink in our group and every Hash in the world. It is significantly cheaper to attend if you don't.

Hey that's nice, I remember that few days ago you have mentioned about a group that do trekking and drinks beer afterwards, and even I found them in my country.
