It Lives Within You

You may have noticed if you’ve been around for a while, that I am a fan of being introspective. There is serious value in looking to yourself for the answers to life’s conundrums.

Professionally, this is why I like the Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) program that can be found in thousands of K-12 schools across the country. A cornerstone of this program is that students have the tools within themselves to succeed academically, they just need help to “unlock” those tools.

Personally, this is why one of my favorite verses in the Book of Mormon is Moroni, chapter 10 verse 3. In this verse Moroni encourages readers to ponder what they have read before continuing in verse 4 to say that after you have pondered you should “. . . ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true. . . “

In both cases, there is some personal responsibility for working through life’s questions before running to someone else for the answer.

Introspection is messy and forces us to be vulnerable with ourselves, and sometimes with others. It is introspection that can help us prepare to set goals that are truly helpful.

Within the recent past I have tried to make this time of year the time of year I start thinking about goals for the next year. What has worked out well so far? What isn’t really working? Where do I want to be in a year? Thinking about these things now, rather than eating WAY TOO MUCH during the holiday season and having my only goal be weight loss (which, let’s be honest, with a new baby is going to be the last thing I should be thinking about) I can set S.M.A.R.T Goals that will truly get me and my family somewhere in the next year.

As you prepare for next year (because yeah, 3 ½ months will go by so fast!) I’d like to encourage you to think about where you want to be a year from now.

Maybe getting healthier is a goal – what are some Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound steps you can take to get there?

Are you interested in making a career change that will help your life be more sustainable? Now is the time to start thinking about how to do that.

Is there a hobby you’ve always wanted to take up? Make a plan for how you’re going to learn that skill.

There is no time like the present to prepare for the future you imagine for yourself.
