I think that has more to due with the fact it doesn't tarnish and its electron probability shell configuration groups a high number of electrons near its core similar to Silver. I know I studied this in P-Chem in college, but that was 25 years and many beers ago.
I have a 24Kt solid Gold wedding ring. It scratches easily but the scratches fade quickly. Like the sharp edges of the scratch just melt away back into the ring!
