I wonder if EOS could solve this problem by becoming the default dApp store (granted you'd likely need to jailbreak your smart phone device). But you're right that this is a problem. The app gatekeepers often go too far and who's to say they are the moral arbitrators of what's right or wrong?
Create Steem App for mobile (apple-appstore and android-playstore) browsing steem blog and has video mode, the sneak in the add filtering and customized vid-speed mechanism in the layer between youtube and steem. (this is centralized and eventually they can stop it like pro-tube)
Implement a web interface app on steem platform the play youtube and other video content and provide layer of filtering (basically pro-tube on a browser)
Develop a new layer over the steem block chain to dynamically host server side app in eos block chain, then when they run the eos application on any device they can access steem videos (like dtube and youtube via this layer). This will of course be implemented to run off EOS app OR run as a plugin in browser with embedded eos app support. Also EOS must dynamically and random modify the IP given to eos app, allowing us to any unblock location, even unblock restrictions by national firewall.
Now we just have to convince the folks at @dlive and @dan at @eos to implement these supporting features in the next gen apps and blockchain.
First i will commend you for staging this kind of courage by coming out of the box to throw light on this. The world we living in is just like this. Every body wants to gets things done in their own ways, there by trying to place everybody under themselves. The power is just too much and this is painful as we are left with zero choice. Google really needs some competition. No should I say that we need Google to have more competition. They shouldn't throw their weight around like that !
I agree with you on these problems. I make it a point to stay off all links that take me to patronize YouTube. Aside from the fact that I notice psychic attacks as soon as I'm on there, it's just a nasty piece of Google's tentacles squeezing and usurping energy.
I have been uploading my own work to DTube, but it's not getting the support it needs. I am participating in the View.ly ICO now and hoping that their platform can offer us something much better than what we've been seeing up to now.

Solutions . you've named the direct route, jailbreak the jailed phones, download a old version that could be a security liability ... like the devices aren't liable as it is and back it up, torrent it, use a VPN, tor, until the world gets the fact that people are not bargaining chips, or people get that and stop been users, which there is no problem of being, but be a user that respects the values, of freedom, responsibility ... yada yada .. so don't use backdooring corporations or rule bending and term serving people out to get your coins out of you, people want to take your change and give you numbers on a screen and we are all buying it and thanking the world for it.
It's great to have a search engine, but people used to talk to each other and ask those questions face to face, now we have people talking face to facebook and googling, meh ,
decentralised apps :) would be fun, it could possibly work but there needs to be a mobile OS, or they can just run in the browser :) or you could have a server of sorts for apple/goog/e/msOS and run the apps in it, if you are game for that try EOS and delegate a percent to me, anything above .1 is fine by me :) otherwise I'm copylefting it :D
