Useless data? I doubt it. It well could have been used to train IAs or processed to extract relevant metadata before diacarding the raw records.

I also agree that there are plenty of uses for this information and there are plenty of signs that it was utilized, such as Zuckerberg's recent pains. A reasonable expectation of privacy in conversation begs for a level of anonymity to be built in to help protect from very real threats of any exclusive group having access, particularly one that has demonstrated frequent aggressions against the freedoms afforded to citizens via the Constitution.
The opportunities blockchain technologies provide could allow for uses for personal data while also returning autonomy to individuals.
