Potential Gridcoin Whitelist CandidatessteemCreated with Sketch.

in #gridcoin7 years ago

The following BOINC projects have recently become active once again making them candidates for whitelisting for Gridcoin rewards. What are your thoughts?

DrugDiscovery@Home
https://boinc.drugdiscoveryathome.com/

DrugDiscovery@Home is a distributed computing project, which uses the power of different computing devices worldwide (PC, GPUs, smartphones, clusters etc.). The computing time is kindly provided by volunteers, who want to make their impact into discovery of new drugs for the most dangerous and widespread diseases.

The Drug Discovery project is recovering from an ill fated link-up with the SONM project. The original project staff are now back in control and have restarted the project. I would say that this is a prime candidate for being added to the whitelist.

Please see my post on the BOINC forums for background.

Acoustics@Home
http://www.acousticsathome.ru/boinc/

Acoustics@home is a BOINC-based volunteer computing project aimed at solving inverse problems in underwater acoustics.

In underwater acoustics the notion of geoacoustic inversion refers to a collection of techniques that can be used for the reconstruction of medium parameters. The medium parameters are usually understood as the sound speed profile in water (i.e., the dependence of the sound speed on the depth) and the sound speed and density in the sea bottom sediment layers. Medium parameters reconstruction is of great importance for problems of underwater communication and for the development of underwater navigation systems.

Acoustics at home has recently restarted work after presenting a paper at the BOINC:FAST 2017 conference in Paris. The one potential issue stopping whitelist of this project is that the project does not appear to be SSL. This has been raised as an issue on previous votes although no official requirement for whitelisted projects to be SSL has been raised.

Mind Modelling
https://mindmodeling.org/

MindModeling@Home is a research project that uses volunteer computing for the advancement of cognitive science. The research focuses on utilizing computational cognitive process modeling to better understand the human mind. We need your help to improve on the scientific foundations that explain the mechanisms and processes that enable and moderate human performance and learning.

A long shot, I will say up front that I am keen on this project for personal reasons. The project has been out of work for a long time but now has work.

The big issue here is having a stable supply of work, I have posted on the project forum asking if the project will have more stable work but I am not hopeful. This project would be a prime candidate for any kind of Grey listing that Gridcoin implements.

Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings. If you have found this post useful please consider upvoting, resteeming and/or following me.

Sort:

Before any of these projects are whitelisted lets observe and stress test them. The previous two whitelist additions were very messy, so extra caution would be nice.

I would like to see:

  • Steady work outside the test batches
  • A WU failure rate below 5%
  • Actual research aims
  • A stress test of the server that passed

I am happy to point my cluster at any new project suggestions for 6 hours or so to see if it keeps up before the Team Gridcoin wave arrives.

Your cluster basically IS the Team Gridcoin wave :D

Haha, maybe on the smaller projects. If I turn all my hardware to a bigger project such as SETI or Einstein it is hardly noticeable!

Yes, yes, we all know @dutch has a big one ;)

dies of laughter

Well "Actual research aims" is a rather loos term - i would consider "Enigma@home" and "Collatz Conjecture" as projects with no solid reseach aims. The one i trying to break a few crypto messages which will probably contribute nothing at all to history if we know there content. It will provide no additional knowleged about crypto.
Collatz i just itterating more and more integer Numbers and will find a sequence which is always reaching 1. It is very unlikely that if will lead to falsification of the collatz conjecture. It will not lead to a mathematical proove.

Both clearly have less scientific values than e.g. Rosetta or WCG even when they are sucessful.

This means one has to have clear rules what is an valid research aim. If you argue that Collatz and Enigma have a proper research aim one can accept nearly every project which has the aim to discover something with computer power.

Climateprediction because their project was removed over daily stats being changed to weekly stats - had a chat with their project administrator during the workshop and he's going to look into this. In the mean time, a vote would be productive.

Likewise, what about distributeddatamining? Has their project become stable yet?

If drugdiscovery is free of SONM then I think it's a great candidate, the setup always seemed bogus to me and I was saddened to be proved right.

Acoustics sounds interesting, excuse the pun.

If there aren't enough WUs I think MindModelling needs to stay off for now, but I hope to see it back soon.

Mo science!

That has been my exact thinking.

I am a great fan of having as many projects as possible whitelisted, however I fear Mind Modelling falls into the pit that some form of grey listing may solve being as intermittent as it is.

I have had similar feedback on IRC from @Gunde

I think the three projects are quite interesting. However, I think that every BOINC project must proof stability, security and a big amount of work available before being whitelisted.

DrugDiscovery@Home made a test for creating an Ethereum token that rewards crunching, but it seems the project has been canceled:

I believe that that was part of the SONM problems and as such has been abandoned with the break up.

Thanks for amazing information

My proposal for delisting: SRBase!

If a project does not admit new users, it should be immediately delisted from the white list, especially if it is not a popular one (SRBase has the fewest users of all projects), otherwise it is a closed club distributing coins to its members, depriving the other projects and users of their fair share, as their user base is increasing over time.

SRBase admits new users. Not sure what you're talking about.

Perhaps you missed this on their front page:
The invitation code for creating new accounts is pillepalle

It is both accepting new users and incredibly popular. The user numbers are misleading, as in SRBase almost everyone is active. In Enigma@Home, for example, there are far more total users but far less active users.
