The parts of the body that KEEP GROWING from birth till death; Myths and Facts.

in #health5 years ago (edited)

In contrast to my previous post - "The parts of the body that remain the same in size from birth till death; Myths and Facts", there are some parts of the body that continue to grow or develop at even old age.

Before addressing the facts, there are common myths that needs to be addressed:

  • The finger nails grows throughout lifetime even after the death of the person. It's a NO. The moment breathing stops, all the metabolic activity of the cells of the body stops.

  • We may also have noticed that the ears and nose of aged individuals are larger compared to even adult in their 40s.

Normally, as aging continues, most cells loses their function and efficiency. Metabolic activities of cells decreases drastically, organs become less efficient, muscles weaken, fat tissues deteriorate and less is stored, skin wrinkles as the dermal layer things out, immune system weakens and so on.

The nose and ears are made of cartilages, precisely, elastic cartilages. These cartilages are rumoured to attain such size in the old due to their continuous growth. This is also a NO. Like other weakened cells, the cartilages of the nose and ears loose their rigidity, stretch and sag making it appear as if it has increased in size (as in by growth)

...

After the age of puberty, the development of all organs with respect to size would be approaching it peak till aging start to set in. I believe this to should be around the 40s. At this stage, some cells either divide very slowly or start to disintegrate and the function is thereby affected.

There are different opinions on the parts of the body that keep growing from birth to death. This means that not everyone would agree with my answers. Funnily, it's seem confusing to me too.
These parts of the body include:

  • The hairs
  • The nails
  • Blood cells are also continually produced at old age.

The hairs and the nails are continually produced throughout one's lifetime except if due to some genetic or acquired conditions (e.g. baldness). Thick hairs are seen to emerge in old folks in their 70s and beyond especially from the nostrils, on and in the ear. This is not even found in those in their 40s showing that hairs do grow continuosly. And of course, they still trim their nails at this age.

The bone marrow produces blood cells throughout life as the red blood cells' lifespan is approximately 120 days and needs to be replaced after this. However, the process is occurring at a slower rate as body cells are weakened and disintegrating so, the body receives lesser amount of nutrient. This is the reason why any infection or cancer relatedto blood is prominent at this stage of life.
