Vernonia amygdalia popularly known as bitter leaf because of its bitter taste. It is from the family Asteraceae. Bitter leaf is popularly known for its great medicinal value here in Africa. The leaf is said to be rich with so many vitamins, flavonoids, antibacterial, antifungal and other phytochemicals which helps in combating diseases.
One of the most popular benefits of bitter leaf is its ability to help in reducing blood sugar level which in turns help in the prevention of diabetes. The presence of andrographolide in bitter leaf also helps in the protection against colon cancer, gastric cancer, and prostate cancer.
The presence of Flavonoids, Vitamin C and E which possesses powerful antioxidant activity also helps in the fight against the formation of free radicals that can result in cancer. Bitter leaf is also known as a good detoxifying agent which helps in mopping up impurities from the body.
