Alright... I won't be dropping any poem, motivational write up or a post about how my day went today. Let's go into something health related today.
Well today's write up is to create awareness about GLAUCOMA

After reading this write up I would advise that you go for an eye check up or encourage other people around or close to you to go for an eye check up to know if one has glaucoma or not for when noticed at the beginning, it can be managed and not cured for there is no cure.

Glaucoma is a disease that can leads to one blindness. Glaucoma is an acquired chronic optic neuropathy. It is a disease that affects the eyes. It is a silent eye killer that attacks without warning or symptoms till it has gotten to a stage where vision is impaired.

It is safe to say that about 60 million people in the world today have glaucoma and about 6 million people are totally blind from glaucoma. This disease cannot be cured i.e, glaucoma has no cure, once vision has been lost it cannot be restored. Glaucoma is a disease that also can affect both eyes if not managed properly and it affects adults more.

Glaucoma is classified in the following ways;

1. Primary Glaucoma
2.Congenital Glaucoma
3. Secondary Glaucoma
4. Absolute Glaucoma

✓ Primary Glaucoma: This type of glaucoma is most common with blacks and whites. This disease is likely to cause blindness especially in blacks. The major problem with this primary glaucoma is the absence of symptoms until relatively late in the disease. Without treatment, it may progress insidiously to complete blindness.

✓ Congenital Glaucoma: Although, this is rare. It manifests at birth. The earliest and most common way it is detected is epiphora. Photophobia and decreased corneal huster. In untreated cases, blindness occurs early and treatment is always surgical.

✓ Secondary Glaucoma: This is an increased intraocular pressure occurring as one manifestation of some other eye disease. Treatment includes controlling intraocular pressure by medical or surgical means.

✓ Absolute Glaucoma:The end result of any uncontrolled glaucoma is a hard, sightless and often painful eye.

Well time didn't permit me to go deeper to explain the causes and how some of the types of glaucoma listed above can be managed when discovered on time. Maybe that will come as a part 2 or you can do a further research during your spare time. Well till then, ensure you go for an eye check and encourage someone to also, so as to reduce the soaring rate of blindness that resulted from glaucoma.
