Women's Health : Cervical Cancer

Cancer is one of those diseases Mankind really wants to fight because it affects any part of the body. Cancer has also been known to be the leading cause of death in both men and women.

Cervical cancer is one of the diseases that affects women and it remains a common cause of death in women affecting all race but, mostly developing countries without access to pap smear for early detection.
Personally, I have lost an aunt to cervical cancer, my childhood friend also lost her mum to cervical cancer.
And am sure many people have been affected because of their loved ones dealing with this disease.

WHAT IS CERVICAL CANCER ?
This is also known as cancer of the cervix, which is a type of cancer that starts from the uterine cervix. Although,If detected early it can be cured through vaccination against HPV which is known to cause cervical cancer.

CERVIX
The narrow neck like passage forming the lower end of the uterus. It connects the main body of the uterus to the vaginal/birth canal.

CAUSES

  1. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Infection spread through sexual contact.
    2.Many Sexual Partners
    3.Smoking
    4.Birth Control Pills
    5.Early Sexual Contact before sexual maturity

SYMPTOMS
The following symptoms can suggest cervical cancer although other symptoms may exist.

  1. Abnormal Vaginal bleeding
    2.Increased Vaginal Discharge
    3.Bleeding after menopause
    4.Painful Sex and bleeding after intercourse
    5.pelvic pain
    6.Heavier menstrual periods

RISK FACTORS

  1. Immune System Supression
    2.Past/Current Chlamydia infection
    3.Overweight
    4.Mutiple pregnancy
    5.Family History of Cervical cancer
    6.Women whose husbands are married to more than one wife.

TREATMENT OPTIONS
1.Radiation Therapy
2.Surgery
3.Chemotherapy

Cervical cancer can be diagnosed through pap smear test or other procedures that samples the cervix tissue such as X-Ray, CT Scan, MRI And a PET Scan May be used to determine the stage of the cancer.

PREVENTION
Is very possible to prevent cervical cancer
Through Early detection with pap smear test and vaccination.

  1. Vaccination And Modern Screening
    There are vaccines available to prevent infection with the most common types associated with cancer.
  2. HPV Testing
    3.Avoiding Smoking
    4.The use of condoms
  3. Sex Education for young people to learn the importance of abstinence and staying faithful to one sexual partner.

We must learn to support people living with cancer and also encourage young women to go for pap smear test for early detection and prevention.
