Check Work Emails for Health

Research conducted by Virginia Tech University revealed that checking emails related to work after office hours or when they opened their eyes in the morning could endanger health. Employees who do that are proven to have levels of anxiety that are harmful to their health.

Studies carried out show "flexible limits" between personal and work affairs increasing stress. It makes a person become unconscious with the existing social atmosphere.

"Competing work and non-work life demands present a dilemma for employees, which triggers feelings of anxiety and endangers work and personal life," said co-author William Becker, a management professor at Pamplin College of Business reported by the Daily Mail.

The findings add to the growing body of evidence that "flexible work limits" often change to "unlimited work". This has consequences for superiors assuming staff will never rest.

That concern arises from millions of employees who read e-mails before they go to sleep and the first time they wake up. Becker's study found that it had the effect of causing tension and anxiety, for them and their partners, or their children.

The result is the first paper to identify a phenomenon that has implications for office workers around the world. Previous research has shown pressure from increased job demands causes tension and conflict in family relationships.

This happens when employees cannot fulfill the non-work role at home. "It's like when someone brings work home to finish it," said Dr. Becker.

According to Becker, the harmful effects of organizational culture 'that must always be ready' are often unknown or disguised as benefits. It is also often considered an increase in comfort or higher autonomy and control over the limits of work life.

"Our research exposes reality, (that)" flexible work limits "often turn into" unlimited work, "sacrificing the health and well-being of employees and their families."

He said policies that reduce monitoring of electronic communications outside work would be ideal. When that is not an option, the solution might be to set the limits of electronic communication that can be received during working hours.

Previous research has found that checking work at home emails or receiving calls from bosses on weekends can damage health. Another study of 57 thousand people found that more than half of people worked outside their normal hours.

The researchers found that those who work at night and on weekends are more likely to complain of insomnia, headaches, fatigue, anxiety, and stomach problems.

Muscle problems and cardiovascular problems are also associated with working outside normal hours. Scientists call for a much tighter rule to stop the work of attacking people's household life.
