in #health6 years ago

Most people like to sleep on their stomachs and feel that they are more comfortable. I love a nap on my tummy in the afternoon and now the latest news for adults children and babies. Beware that though, as this practice is dangerous for your health.

We ask: "Why is it so bad to sleep in that position?" This article should clear your doubt with scientific proof. The Time Magazine published and dedicated it to this question. It revealed that the latest development in spinal surgery was the result of how we sleep. In that issue they showed the latest development in medical hardware used and how it dealt with the problems of slipped and surpressed discs.

They showed pictures of different operations they performed on individuals. These surgeons presented a list of recommendations to avoid spinal problems. Most importantly was said not to sleep on you stomach. They explained the reason why this was a bad position. The body structure of our spine or backbone is the heaviest of the body. When you sleep on your stomach, every organ below the spine is soft tissue and soft organs, like intestines, lungs and stomach, all of which are also weak organs.

What happens here is due to the gravitational pull, the spine sags downward. This is called lumber curvature of the spine. On the other hand, if you were to sleep on your back, you spine is in a much better and stable condition which is healthy. Scientifically proven that sleeping on you stomach is definitely very unhealthy. This part of the article deals with adults, children and youth.

In babies and small children this position could cause crib death. In 1989, an article in British newspapers stated that medical scientists studying a particular illness which seemed to affect small children up to 2 years. Parents not knowing better placed their children in their cribs on their stomachs when sleeping and quite a number of kids died in their sleep. Different names were given to this occurrences, such as Sudden infant death syndrome, but scientists didn't know caused it and why did it happen.

Medical researchers did some statistical studies. They sent out researchers to people who had to deal with such tragedy. Through this method they gathered information on the circumstances of the incidents, such as what kind of beds were used, the temperature and anything anything that was related to the circumstances when the child went to bed.

Seven years later in 1996, the researchers, after making it clear to parents when they brought their children to a doctor or hospital, that their children were not to go to bed on their stomachs. With a countrywide campaign to make this known to every parent, they found that after the 7 years, the rate of crib deaths dropped by 68%. The proof is in the pudding if you're still not convinced. Take care and strive to be healthy.
