Can Watching Television/Computer Close-Up Harm Our Eyesight?

in #health7 years ago

Are you a parent and you seem to struggle with your child watching too much TV up close? Or are you finding it difficult with your child glued at all times to the PC? There are many myths surrounding the problem of children watching too much TV up close. Certain myths have even gone ahead to show a correlation between watching TV up close and the eye related problems.

So, in all these mysteries surrounding the issue where are the truths and facts? Well, to shed some light on the problem, it is of great importance to have a little bit of history on where such myths started before demystifying them and getting into the gist of the matter.

In the very fast place, the myths are known to have cropped from the early days, particularly in the 1960s. During this time, most of the companies manufacturing television sets did not adhere to the regulations by the state agency on the amount of radiation emitted by the newly manufactured colored TV sets. This was a major problem to the eyes. But since then, there has been a huge improvement on the same, and now the TV sets are safe and sound for viewing. However, most parents still hold on to this fact.

So what really are the causes of eyes complications from watching TVs or using the PC too much and up close? To begin with, watching too much TV does cause temporary fatigue to the eyes' muscles specifically when the child does this from a close distance. Furthermore, if the habit is prolonged, it results in exhaustion and strained ability to focus on objects.

Similarly, there are biological facts that have proven beyond reasonable doubts why children would stay close to TV or PCs. If the child is short sighted, then, they would most of the times have to sit near the TV set in order to see. Myopic children have a huge problem with focus particularly those in the long distance and the only way they tend to find a temporary solution to this problem is by staying close to the TV. The good news about this particular problem is that it can be solved if detected early enough by visiting an optician to diagnose the disease. In most cases, children are given lenses to help focus on distant objects.

However, there is still the need to avoid too much TV watching, and the notion cannot be easily refuted as it bears a lot of weight. There are other health complications that are related to watching too much TV such as being overweight for lack of physical exercise that is helpful for bodily functions. You can as well advise the children to involve themselves in other constructive activities such as reading or playing out with their friends which are equally healthy for their mental health.

Aside from the effect it may have on a child's eyes, I've noticed in the case of my child too much time spent staring at a tv screen results in

-worse behavior in general
-lowered attention span (his attention span is already very short to begin with)
-lack of motivation to do anything other than stare at a tv or an iPad
-poorer performance in school

I often wonder if increased electronics use by children at a very young age is related to the huge increase in cases of attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) in the United States.

The post is actually about long hours in front of the computer not permanently harming our eyesight.

Ok sorry if I strayed off topic. Didn't mean to ramble.

televisions and pcs hav become ynavoidable now... like we ourselves cannot avoid them.. then they are the child afterall.. therefore its our duty to keep a watch over them....!!!!!!!

technology do come with a risk... it is really upto us whether we use it as a boon or a curse...
anyways nice post...!!!
upvoted and followed...!!!

Yes, almost everything comes with a risk. Everything should be used in moderation.

True. The middle path is usually the safest.

I wonder if that contributes to more people having chronic dry eyes (or similar issues) then in the past.

There's no concrete evidence to prove that chronic eye disease and long hours in front of the PC and TV are related.

Thankyou for information @rubysteem

watching television destroys your mind.
