When traveling on high ground, or when we board an airplane or a lift elevator, we can feel an ear pain and hearing loss.
This is due to the bend or motion of our ear drum. When the air pressure is not the same in the ear compared to our surroundings, the shape of our ear drum is somewhat different. The ear hurts and we are blind.
There is called Eustachian Tube that connects to the inside and the nose. It balances the pressure inside and out of the ear. When we have a cold, the Eustachian tube can be damaged. As a result, the pressure in the ear is raised and our ear drum grows.

In order to restore our hearing, we need to balance the pressure inside and outside the ear. Here are some ways:

  1. Chewing gum while on the plane. Swallowing saliva opens the Eustachian tube. The ear pressure is decreasing.
  2. Try to squeeze the nose and swallow 1 or 2 times. Do this several times to reduce ear pain.

After some time, your hearing should be restored. But if the ear pain persists you will need to see the ENT doctor. There is called Barotrauma where it is possible to puncture the ear drum. Take care.
