That blistering pain in your head, the one that makes doing just about anything from talking to even sleeping hard, that is what we call a headache. What you might not know is that there are numerous types of headaches, and I bet everyone reading this has probably experienced at least two of them. So without wasting anyone's time, how about we jump right in and see just exactly what type of headaches exist.
TYPES OF HEADACHES
We basically have five main types of headaches which include;
- Tension headaches
- Sinus headaches
- Cluster headaches
- Rebound headaches
- Migraines
TENSION HEADACHES
Source
These are basically the most common type of headaches which are characterized by pain in the temple or back of the head. They are relatively harmless and are usually caused by stress or as a side effect of an illness of malaria. They are not anywhere near as serious as a migraine and will most likely not hinder your day to day activities.
TREATMENT
Over the counter drugs like aspirin, panadol, ibuprofen etc can be used to stop the pain
SINUS HEADACHES .
Source
This occurs as a result of the inflammation of the sinus, which in turn is usually caused by an infection. It's usually accompanied by a fever. Once the sinus is blocked, it causes congestion in the nasal cavity which in turn leads to a build-up of pressure in the area, this then causes pain in the forehead and the area just behind the cheekbones. Sinus headaches can be detected with the use of MRI and CT scans or by checking for the presence of pus through a fiber optic scope.
TREATMENT
It can be treated with decongestants and antibiotics
CLUSTER HEADACHES
Source
This is a type of a headache that's characterized by a circular pain around one side of the face as well as nasal congestion or running nose and watery eyes. It affects men a lot more than it affects women and as of now it's cause is unknown. It has no cure and scientists believe that cluster headaches might be genetic. They are reoccurring in nature and usually appear suddenly with or without warning. They make the sufferers so uncomfortable that they become restless and unable to relax.
TREATMENT
Using over the counter drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin can help reduce the pain and manage the situation.
REBOUND HEADACHES
Source
These are headaches that are caused by the overuse of over the counter drugs like aspirin, Advil, ibuprofen, panadol etc. People who suffer from this usually have long-standing battles with headaches and are always on one medication or the other to quell the pain. There are different theories on why rebound headaches occur, some people believe that the headaches are a withdrawal symptom as the amount of these drugs reduce in your system while others believe that the excessive intake of these drugs causes the brain to become too excited and as such trigger more headaches.
TREATMENT
Go and see a doctor.
MIGRAINES
Source
Migraine headaches are caused by neurological disorders and are usually genetic in nature. They are characterized by The following:
- Long lasting headache episodes
- Pain encompasses all or most of the types of pain that were highlighted in the previous types of headaches
- Inability to perform daily activities
- Sensitivity to light and sound, nausea or vomiting
Migraines are basically the worst type of headaches to have and they aren't very easy to treat. If any of your family members are experiencing any of these symptoms then they just might be having a migraine, and as such a time may come when you'll experience the same thing.
TREATMENT
Analgesic, antipsychotic drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs.
