You are what you eat – ever heard of this saying? Looking at it in some ways, this is true! It is true because you will be healthy if you eat better food and you will be unhealthy if you take in unhealthy foods. Food is important to us as it helps us maintain function, increase our ability to grow, and prevent illness. This therefore shows that anybody that values his/her health should imbibe a healthy eating habit. You need to learn more about it if you don’t know.
From the very day we are born, healthy eating is important. Rapid growth from our childhood was due to the foods we eat. The foods we eat are very important to fuel our body to live and also to grow important parts of our body like the bones, organ tissues, and muscles. There may be effect of not getting some of the available nutrients. One of which include stunting our growth. Nutrition is very important for nursing women because breast milk contains all the nutrients a child needs to develop and grow properly. As we grow, our body’s need for healthy food and proper nutrition never changes and our need for more solid foods increases. This shows that healthy eating habit is important for healthy living till the day we die. Healthy eating help our body maintain its functions as we need energy to talk, think, walk, and to perform several other actions increases.
When you eat food, your body will become healthy simply because the food is meeting your body nutritional needs. From the nutrition we take in, our overall health and ability to stay healthy results from the food. An example is the issue of the brain as it needs more protein to develop. Our mental functions will suffer without the necessary nutrition.
How do you then know that you are getting the proper nutrition? The better understanding of this will help you know what your family needs and what you need to know when you want to cook, shop and eat.
The energy our body uses to do these things comes from two places:

  1. Fat reserves in the body from our daily food intake:
    If you lack healthy eating habit, your body will be using the available fats already stored in some parts of the body organs and this will make you to be feeling sluggish and weak. We need the right nutrients to allow our body organs perform their jobs well along with energy-providing nutrients like carbohydrates and fats. Healthy eating helps to produce hormones and other substances in the body that make sure everything is working perfectly. Without healthy eating, your body will not function properly because it will not be able to produce these hormones.
  2. Healthy eating is important in order to prevent illness:
    Unhealthy eating habit can weaken our body natural defence system thereby unable to attack diseases. This in turn give room for bacteria and viruses to attack the body. Our body is like a well-trained army, for example, if they don’t have enough food to eat, it will not do well in war. Our body will not be able to operate normally on a day-to-day basis. The best training you can give your children is to understand the basics of healthy eating habits and how vital it is.
    Although, as an adult, it is never too late. If you know that you have an unhealthy eating habit, consider changing your diet. Following a good exercise package and you will start feeling better for it.
