Material consistente en tierra, arena o piedras, pero libre de material orgánico y otras impurezas que no debe presentar acumulaciones en forma de terrones, y que proviene de un sitio distinto a la obra.

Un préstamo puede ser la excavación realizada en proximidades a un terraplén y utilizado para construirlo y ese material adecuarse a condiciones de las exigencias del proyecto, sobre todo en cuanto a la compactación.

Préstamo también es el material pedregoso extraído de una mina o cantera para ser utilizado en variadas modalidades constructivas. Este material de préstamo generalmente es transportado en camiones desde la mina o préstamo hasta la obra.
