So I found this article, and I just got to thinking, why isn't anyone telling them about steem?

Hey there!
First, I don't think you have trust issues. It's totally okay to be trusting.
I also think this happens EVERYWHERE in the world, though it's likely more common in some. It's generally an everyday occurrence (if in a city) for someone to ask you for spare change... or more.
I, too, have fallen prey to this. But now, with a new understanding...
Some people are badly off... some are not.
If I'm in a comfortable enough position to help another being without it affecting me for the negative... I'm generally gonna do it.
Now, I am NOT a proponent of enabling people to never get better... But every once in a while, we all need a hand. โค๏ธ
Your specific situation... I would have probably assumed I'd never hear from them... but honestly, would be hoping I would... and quite interested to see if I would... cause ya never know. But, I would have traded the ring for the money, feeling good I was able...expecting nothing in return.
Moral of the story: Don't give up on people. We are all working our way through this insane mushroom trip we call life. No one's perfect... but there is an awful lot of good out there too. ๐
