THE FIRST VICEROY


Lord Canning (1858-69) was the first viceroy after the War of Independence. Instead of seeking revenge on the persons responsible for the uprising, he tried to soothe the bitter feelings on both sides. But he also severely punished those who were responsible for atrocities.
