There was a huge influx of Italian immigrants to the "Cono Sur" or southern part of South America in the late 1800's / early 1900's. Argentina's tango music is heavily influenced by Italian music and instrumentation. The bandoneón is an adaptation of the accordions that settlers brought with them.
