Hays Galleria Roof

I chose this photograph of Hays Galleria for my entry to @juliank's and @photocontests architectural photography contest because of the beautiful roof.

This building stands on the south bank of the River Thames in the London Borough of Southwark.

Nowadays, Hays Galleria has a number of uses including offices, restaurants, shops, and flats but it used to be a working dock.

Hays Galleria is named after its original owner, a merchant called Alexander Hay, who bought the property in 1651.

It was a brewhouse at the time but he converted it into a wharf and at its peak, 80% of the dry produce imported into London passed through here.

It closed down in 1970 when the shipping industry started using container shipping which required deeper water ports.

It was redeveloped in the 1980s.
