Daniel B. May: Shotgun Messenger

in #history6 years ago

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

As you know, I've been talking about the life of Daniel May as a guard
for the Deadwood Cheyenne Stagecoach line in the 1870's. He's an
interesting character because he helped save many lives and protect
gold shipments as well as passengers on the first commercial road
between Deadwood, South Dakota and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Deadwood Cheyenne stage around 1880:

Most people have never heard of him even though he and his fellow
guards or "shotgun messengers" played a vital role in the development
of the first travel route between the two cities.

Today I wanted to tell you about one of the many skirmishes that
happened in which Mr. May played a part. There was an encounter
with robbers, a gang of 6 men, who held up a stage coming from
Cheyenne. For some reason there were no guards, I reckon because
it carried no gold.

There were just two passengers, a man and a woman. The thieves
took money from the man but left the woman alone.

Now, you gotta ask yourselves..what kind of thieves are these? They
leave the woman alone? She may have had jewelry.. I don't know but
compare that to today's muggers, would they have left a woman
alone? Even the thieves had respect for women back then!

Well, they went through the mail bags and took what valuables were
there and let the stage go, which heading toward Deadwood. There
was also a stage coming FROM Deadwood which was guarded by
May and another messenger and they were on horses.

When the stage from Cheyenne met them they warned about the
robbers up ahead. May and the other guard rode about 2 hundred
yards behind the stage to stay out of sight to the robbers.

This coach was hauling a gold chest with $27,000 worth of gold in it.
So back then that was a bloody fortune.
DQmaGiJ5Exn5zL4cJEFVahrn96ozJ8bVTWeXhqznp28SYy2_1680x8400.png
In fact, $27,000 back then would be comparable to $680,794 today.
And when a good paying job earned $100 per month, you can see
how far that much money would go. I mean, even split up among
5 or 6 guys they could live off that cut for years!
DQmaGiJ5Exn5zL4cJEFVahrn96ozJ8bVTWeXhqznp28SYy2_1680x8400.png
Sure enough, the gang stopped the coach and began rifling through
the mail bags for valuables with May and his partner approaching on
foot, May with a shotgun and his partner with a rifle. When they got
to within 15 ft of the coach the robbers saw them and a gun battle
exploded.

May blew away one of the bandits with his shotgun and the rest took
off, 2 of them limping. The stagecoach driver whipped his horses and
the stage took off, May and his partner mounted and escorted it safely
to the next station.

A group of men from the station went back out to the spot of the
holdup and found a pool of blood where the dead robber laid but
there was no body anywhere.

Now, remember this situation because it ties into the next major
robbery and one of the most bizarre actions you'll ever hear about,
at least in regards to a United States Marshall. So remember the
missing dead bandit for the next post.

In the next post the robbers get smart. Instead of trying to capture a
stage on the road they just take over a station and wait in ambush for
a stage with a gold chest to arrive.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

Another interesting part to the story, Jon. Do you think the coyotes got the dead robber and drug him off. They never leave a trace.
So nice to see the robbers at least had respect for the woman .

howdy there redheadpei! hey that's a good point, the dang coyotes are good at dragging things off and they disappear.
As far as the female passenger, that says it all right there about the difference in how we think of women compared to those days.

Now I have to go and read back all the stories before I read this one!! LOL

How are you cowboy? Long time, no speak!

well howdy there delishtreats! it's so good to see you here. I think this is a pretty mild series so I don't think you'll get grossed out, I mean very little violence. But the back ones are short and as fast as you read you could get through them in no time!

Long time no speak I know! I have a big problem with your non-communication style of communicating! lol. I don't like not talking to you at all. I do not do not do not do not do not like that!!

But this has been a bad week, lots going on, computer problems, been behind all week...but I see you on any curie post. Does that mean you are going crazy on that this week?
You're one of the best commenters on steemit, make me look like a dork! lol. I've only done a few of those curie ones, too far behind.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

Ok, ok, I'll check them out and let you know :)

My non-communication style of communicating? You need to explain to me what you mean because they didn't teach me something like that at school, lol

Bla bla bla.. I'm sure it's gonna be 1,000 comments again :D Yeah, I'm following the curie trail but I didn't comment on all of them... We all know that you're the BEST commenter on Steemit cowboy! I post like 600 comments less per week than you :D

What happened to your poor old computer?

1,000 comments? man I hope it's not that few but it might be!

your non-communication style of communicating means that I haven't heard from you that's all, but I think it sounds clever to say it that way! lol.

As far as commenting I just do alot but as far as quality you are much better and so are many others. You can always think of wonderful things to say to people so that's why I always follow you because if I don't know what to say I can see what you said and that gives me ideas! so thank you. lol.

My computer is temperamental, it's very old and sometimes stops bringing up websites plus takes forever to connect or bring pages up, it's super slow. And my keyboard is also very old and has keys that stick and slows me down. In addition to that our internet connection out here in the country is off and on alot so I get stopped alot.

But this week my computer has been worse than normal so I've lost alot of time. I just need a new one is all. lol.

Not that few?!?! Do you even go to the loo once in a couple of days?! :D

I didn't know that you followed my comments, lol :D That is so cute! You're being CUTE again cowboy! And this is not what you like to hear :D

Keys that stick? Have you considered cleaning your keyboard from time to time? That may help :D I'm sorry to hear about those computer issues. But I'm sure that even your computer thinks that you should give the first place to someone else for at least one week :)

haha! hey delishtreats...well, my best weeks as far as number of comments was 1404 and I had a couple of 1300 weeks so 1,000 doesn't seem very good to me.

But cute???? no no no..there ain't nothing cute about me ever! lol.
I would consider that almost cheating, like looking at a classmate's test answers to know what to say! But that's not cute! lol.

As far as giving someone else first place, well my run here in first place is very temporary in the large scheme of things so others will be able to take first place pretty soon.

As far as earning I should just concentrate on the curie commenting because you don't even have to win that thing to make good steem, do you agree? It's super easy.

VERY CUTE my sweet friend! :D Do my words hurt you? LOL

oh that's very painful indeed! lol. ouch!

Can't wait to hear how this one plays out in the end! Great bit of history! Love that old photo!

howdy again melinda010100! I'm glad you like these, I love the old photos too but it takes too long to find them! lol.

I can imagine that it does! Does the Library of Congress have a searchable archive?

howdy there melinda010100! I haven't really looked there but I should have, in fact I will! I've used state archives before to find them. How are you tonight, are you on steemit?

I'm here! Just wandering around making comments!

howdy back Melinda! oh good. Do you think you made up for that lost time on Monday I think it was?

I really don't have a clue!
This is what the eSteem leaderboard looks like for the month.

howdy back Melinda, sorry I forgot about my Replies while I was visiting posts, time got away from me. But anyway it looks like you're killin it on esteem at least. And I know everyone on the list except the last one.

Hi @janton. Come on you knuckle head. Write a story not a paragraph lol. Spend less time doing comments and write a longer post. Just kidding but that is rude making us wait.Enjoying it so much and you pull a fast one.

hahaha! sorry sir cryptoandcoffee! well I was told by several people that I should shorten my posts and the next robbery is a long drawn out affair so I didn't want to have a huge post. So that's why I cut it off there. thanks so much for reading and for your patience! lol.

Oooh life in the wild west. Takes courage to leave your home for the day!

howdy sir ironshield! yes sir there were more ways to get killed than you could think of back then! lol. Although that's not funny. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

look forward to the next post @janton x

howdy again winchestergirl! thank you, I'm glad you like the post. Thanks for reading and commenting!

Now janton, you are right into the action now! Love it.

howdy today angiemitchell! haha! yes there is a major robbery in the next post with some action in it. I'm glad you like it. Thanks for reading and commenting!

You are welcome janton.

I'm betting that the monsters from Tremors ate the body while the guards were gone.

hahaha! sir Blondie you are so close! haha that is too funny sir. Thank you for reading and commenting.
You know what I've been looking for a silver coin that I bought probably 5 years ago, don't even remember what it was now but it was recommended by someone online so I bought it and now I can't find the dang thing anywhere! lol.
The only coin I have to show noname and I can't find it.

I'm sorry your coins is missing. I hope you find it! It's a terrible thing to lose such a lovely thing as a coin.

I know sir noname, but I will find it eventually. Many things are still messed up even though it's been over 3 years since we moved! lol. you know how that is, but I'll find it eventually.

Yeah, when you move things can end up staying lost for a while. For me, if I haven't missed things for that long, it's time to give them to the Goodwill and let someone else get to store it.

yes sir very true, I agree.

Oh no! I hope you find your coin. Maybe invest in a good safe. I keep mine in a safe.

howdy cosmiccrimes! oh it's here somewhere, yes I have a good safe and most of the valuables are in there and I thought that coin was too but I must have put it somewhere else. It's here I just have to find it.

You all will probably do house cleaning one day and you will find it.

haha! yeah the way I put things off it might be awhile but I'm sure you're right!

Don't feel bad. My house looks like a tornado hit it sometimes lol.

So... Does your wife have steel-toed red wings?

ahaha! very good blacklux. In fact her favorite shoes are a pair of steel-toed hiking boots by Timberland! well she's a Texan now so it makes sense and she fits right in but she just bought a beautiful pair of black combat boots by Reebok but they don't have steel toes.

I will have to go back a read janton.
I lost some time with your stories as I have been and still am a bit preoccupied with my brother who is sick and in the hospital. But I shall go back on your blog..

oh I totally understand, steemit falls way down in priorities of real life. I was just curious to know if you like the clothing that the women wore back then because I have some great photos but those are so far back that I was just going to send you the links if you didn't see them.

What happened to your brother and how is he doing?

Thank you janton.
