Doc Holliday And The Earps Go To WarsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #history6 years ago

howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

Today I'm continuing the story of Doc's life. When we left off two
days ago the gunfight at the OK Corral had just ended with Virgil
and Morgan Earp wounded but alive. Doc had killed two of Ike
Clanton's gang and one of Ike's sons were killed.

here's Doc Holliday, Wyatt, Morgan and Virgil Earp

Now, much of the rest of Doc's actions were tied to Wyatt Earp and
Wyatt's crusade against the Clanton gang but that's the choice that
Doc made, to be totally aligned with Wyatt, so Wyatt's story kind of
becomes Doc's story at this point in their lives.

It seems that the feud which had been building between the Earps
and the Clanton gang had died down after the OK Corral but things
are often not what they seem and on a night in 1882 while Morgan
Earp was playing pool, someone shot him in the back from a dark
alley outside the saloon and he died from that wound.

I think that's the way it was showed in the movie Tombstone also,
it's been a few years since I've seen it though. So here you have the
Earp brothers plus Doc Holliday and you go and kill one of the
brothers! Gee, I wonder what could possibly happen next??

Of course Wyatt and his brothers swore to kill all of the Clanton
gang and that's what they set out to do, with Doc at their side.

The first encounter happened just 2 days after Morgan was shot.

Wyatt and Doc ran into Ike Clanton and one of his associates,
Frank Stilwell, at the train station. Ike slipped away but Stilwell
ran down the railroad tracks with Wyatt chasing him and filling
him full of holes. Here's Ike Clanton:

But Wyatt's Posse was just getting started. They got word that some
of Clanton's gang was at a camp outside of town, namely Pete Spencer,
but when they got there another gang member was there instead, his
name was Cruz. This was on March 21st, 1882.

The frightened Cruz named all the men who had murdered Morgan,
himself included. Earp and his men filled Cruz with bullet holes.

The Earp “posse” rode out once again and on March 24, 1882, they ran
into Curly Bill Brocius and eight of his men near Iron Springs. All
were part of the Clanton gang. A gunfight ensued where Curly Bill and
Johnny Barnes were killed.

Later when Doc was in Colorado the Denver Republican ran this
quote of Doc describing that gunfight:

"Eight rustlers rose up from behind the bank and poured from thirty-
five to forty shots at us. Our escape was miraculous.

The shots cut our clothes and saddles and killed one horse, but did
not hit us. I think we would have been killed if God Almighty wasn’t
on our side. Wyatt Earp turned loose with a shotgun and killed Curly
Bill. The eight men in the gang which attacked us were all outlaws,
for each of whom a big reward has been offered."

And the hunt continued. By the time a year had passed Doc Holliday
and the Earps had killed Frank Stilwell, Indian Charlie, Dixie Gray,
Florentino Cruz, Johnny Barnes, Jim Crane, Harry Head, Bill Leonard,
Joe Hill, Luther King, Charley Snow, Billy Lang, Zwing Hunt, Billy
Grounds and Hank Swilling.

Pete Spence turned himself in to the authorities where he could
“hide” in the penitentiary. lol. Here's a photo of Pete's mugshot:

handsome devil ain't he? haha! That's fifteen men! No one got into
trouble. These were outlaws they were killing. Plus I suppose that
there was no one on earth who could have stopped the Earps any-
way.

There were a few who fled the state, one of them was John Ringo
and if I remember right, he was the one that Doc took care of in the
movie where he uttered the famous line.."I'm your huckleberry."
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that.

I think that part of the movie was probably "creative license" but
there's a book by Wyatt that I'm gonna read, he wrote a biography
that I want to get. By the way he just died in 1929 so we have good
photos and information about his life. A lot of documentation.

In May of that year Wyatt and Doc left Tombstone vowing to never
return again and headed to Colorado.

Love this time in history for the crazy and often exaggerated stories that come from it, but so glad I didn't live back then. Hard life compared to now.

howdy there pifc and I couldn't agree with you more. The stories and times were wild but living back then would be no picnic and life expectancies were very short! lol. thank you so much for commenting.

Well janton, I would not have ever read about these western characters if you were not posting these riveting stories. It is a good reason to be on Steemit.

really? well I guess not because you probably didn't know these crazy men existed. AND women, there were some real crazy women too! thank you!

It is nice to get the real story behind the movie glamour. There were some crazy characters indeed.

I've found you after @bengy featured you in his entry for The Pay It Forward Contest

I admit this is a topic that doesn't interested me that much... but here's a small upvote to help you along.

well howdy there sir trincowski! thank you so much for your comment and support, that means alot.

Hi @janton. Very interesting and maybe I will watch Tombstone again.

howdy there cryptoandcoffee! oh man, now I gotta watch it again too, it's been probably 10 years.

Awesome story telling and I adore the old pictures. One day I will travel to these places and feel the history.

Does the story have to really end 😊?
Have been really enjoying it. Thank you.

haha! I know what you mean annephilbrick..but while Doc's story ends I have an endless supply of other tales ready to post!

This really is a fascinating story. I bet the book by Wyatt would be a good read. You'll have to another post when you have finished that book!

Not bad @janton, this was
very interesting story...

You know things are going down hill for someone when that
someone makes the decision to go and hide in prison like Pete Spence...

/FF

haahha! so true friendly-fenix, but wouldn't you if you knew those guys were after you? lol. I don't know why he didn't go to Mexico.

@janton
Hmm, yes that is a good question. I looked into it, your story was taking place during the presidency of Porfirio Diaz. During this period Mexico had something of a "golden age" there was (almost) no civil-unrest, the economy was doing great, one peso was supposedly worth more then 3 dollars!

And the country was crawling with "Rurales" a riding police force, who where known for their brutality and "efficiency" against bandits or any other trouble makers.

So maybe it wasn't the most attractive option for Pete Spence during that specific time...

The rule of Porfirio Díaz (1876–1911) was dedicated to the rule by law, suppression of violence, and modernization of all aspects of the society and economy.

History of Mexico
The history of Mexico, a country in the southern portion of North America, covers a period of more than three millennia. First populated more than 13,000 years ago, the territory had complex indigenous civilizations before being conquered and colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century. One of the important aspects of Mesoamerican civilizations was their development of a form of writing, so that Mexico's written history stretches back hundreds of years before the arrival of the Spaniards in 1519. This era before the arrival of Europeans is called variously the prehispanic era or the precolumbian era.

oh wow friendly-fenix....it sounds like your style of justice at that time was similar to ours.. maybe Mexico could use some of that now days?
but your point is well taken unless Spence could come off as a nice, law abiding person they would probably dispatch him in no time!

@janton
Im going to avoid the topic of the current situation in Mexico, it's very complex... But there is a new president who seems pretty cool, he is going to give the elderly more pension money, (I heard the double), but what do I know... Contemporary Mexican politics is the last thing I want to write about on steemit...
=)

/FF

yes sir friendly-fenix ...well I wasn't really trying to get a conversation going about that anyway, I have no idea what's going on there but I hope the new president can make some good changes.

Another thumbs up from me!

This is turning into a spoiler alert lol..... Super great article man.

well thank you sir preppervetuk, I so appreciate you kind words, coming from a military man ..those did alot of shooting didn't they?
But I don't think they really expected a shoot out at the OK Corral or I think they all would have brought there shotguns don't you? as a military strategy?
if they would have all had shotguns I don't think the Clanton gang would have tried anything. what's your opinion? and have you posted recently?
