The Celts came from central Europe, although their previous origins are nuclear. Around 500 BC, perchaps to escape wars with their Germanic neighbours, they began to move westwards. Groups of people settled in what are now Spain, France, Britain and Ireland. Celts were warlike and their arrival usually led to fighting. The Celts were artistic people. They loved stories and music, and they made beautiful jewellery and metalwork decorated with abstract designs and animal shapes. They had no written languages, passing on their legends of gods and heroes in stories around the fire. Most of what we know of the Celts today comes from the writings of their enemies, such as the Romans. The Celts themselves left a legacy of art and legend, and language: Welsh, Breton, Cornish, Irish and Scottish Gaelic are all Celtic languages.
Fact file
The Celts often constructed their settlements on hilltops which could be easily defended. They are identified by circular defensive ditches that still survive in former Celtic areas.
