Explore Mayan heritage: Xcambo Ruins
Xcambo is a Mayan archaeological site of considerable extension in the State of Yucatan in the Yucatan Peninsula, it is only 2 km away from Progreso port on the Gulf coast.
It is considered by experts to be one of the largest pre-Hispanic settlements which was discovered only 5 years ago. The main function of this community was to provide salt for for the Mayan Empire.
There are three main architectural groups that make up the site.
As most buildings have staircases, and climbing on all of them is permitted, we hiked to the top of the highest structure called the Pyramid of the Cross. This took it to a new level!
The name Xcambo means “Lugar de la donacella” Place of virginity.
Xcambo is not impressively large (especially compared to other sites in the Yucatan), but is well maintained and very quaint. It sure has its own charm.
If you are in the Progresso area and you enjoy history, it would definitely be worth your time.
Entrance fee: $65 mxn

Very cool and surprising that it was only discovered 5 years ago.
I was also surprised.. even many of its structures are still being unearthed and restored today.
