You know maybe this answer ? Yes or no ? On the eve of finale of the 21th edition of the world, the question we might ask ourselves: who invented the world cup?

The paternity and the creation of this competition returns to French Jules Rimet.

** Biography **
Jules Ernest Séraphin Valentin Rimet, been born on October 24th, 1873 to Theuley ( Haute-Saône). He is raised by his grandfather farmer. After his certificate of study, he joins his parents grocers in Paris street Cler. Afterward, they move and settle down street of Grenelle. It is there that he discovers the soccer.
He understands while this sport is beneficial for the body and the spirit of the young people, creating bonds of friendship between the people.

Serious student, Jules Rimet makes a success of brilliant of studies and obtains his diploma of lawyer. However, he is fascinated by sports and ventures on various disciplines as the athletics and the fencing.
At the age of 23, he establishes with his brother le Red Star Football club of whom he will be the president from 1897 till 1910.
Within the club, he applies it humanist values in particular his opening to the young people stemming from disadvantaged families.

In 1920, Jules Rimet intégre the union of the French societies of the athletic sports ( USFSA).
He integrates the direction of the USFSA which introduces with the English federation, the foundation of the International Football Federation association (FIFA) in 1904. Jules Rimet wishes that the soccer becomes a discipline of the Olympics of 1908 reserved for the amateur players and opposes Pierre de Coubertin.
Already at that time, settles down the conflict between the amateur sport and the professional disputed by THE USFSA which forbids to clubs any international competitions. THE USFSA slams the door of the negotiations.
He becomes aware of it and decides to base in 1910 the interfederal French Committee to replace USFSA with FIFA and will be there the representative in 1914.

** The World War I **
During the World War I, Jules Rimet is a lieutenant of infantry and will receive one Croix de guerre.
After the armistice, he takes back his activities of sports leader. On April 11th, 1919, he is elected a president of the French Federation of Soccer Association.
Strong supporter of the professionalism, he considers it as the only way to open the practice of the soccer to the modest and average classes.

** The presidency of FIFA **
In 1921, Jules Rimet takes the FIFA management, which he will chair during thirty three years, from 1921 till 1954,
He develops the activities of FIFA and works particularly to the organization of a world tournament open to the professionals, in spite of the reluctances of the upholders of " the aristocratic amateurism " as Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the International Olympic Committee.
However, countries remain still very affected by the consequences of the great war and certain nations withdrew from FIFA.

** A project adopted in 1929: creation of the world cup **
During the congress of Amsterdam of 1928, Jules Rimet and Henri Delaunay secretary of the French federation
Inspired by the success of the world Olympic tournaments of 1924 and 1928, propose the organization of a world championship under the aegis of FIFA. The project is adopted next year. For this first edition, it is Uruguay which has the responsibility to organize this world cup. Are the latter double Olympic champion. This sports party will also be the celebration of the centenary of their independence. Uruguay took care of the transport costs to make come European nations of which France.
This edition was criticized by the European because of the distance and marked by incidents during finale between the Argentina and the organizing country. However, this world cup 1930 is a sports and commercial success.

** The fascist and Nazi regimes and the Second World War **
For the second edition in 1934, Italy is chosen as host country. Unfortunately, Mussolini uses this event for its fascist propaganda. The world cup is covered for the first time by the radio.

** A new name: the cup Jules Rimet **
It is in 1946 when the world cup winged Victoire representative Niké, the Greek goddess of the victory, holding an octagonal chalice is renamed the cup Jules Rimet in homage to its initiative. The trophy created by the French sculptor Abel Lafleur is 35 centimeters high, weighs 6,175 kilograms and is silver fine plated.

** His end of career **
Jules Rimet leaves definitively the FFFA in 1949, after thirty years of mandate, following the " Saarland scandal ".
Appointed a commander of the Legion of Honor, he is proposed, at the end of its life, to be Nobel Peace Prize but dies before being possibly elected.

Jules Rimet drafts a book which is entitled: "The wonderful Story of the World cup " published in May, 1954.
He dies on October 15th, 1956 to Suresnes, at the age of 82.

In 2004 he receives posthumously the Order of the merit of FIFA.

In 2012 is created the literary prize Jules Rimet by the Association Jules Rimet Sport and Culture rewarding the sports literary works.
