Aceh is the most popular Islamic tourist destination in Indonesia. One of the religious attractions in Aceh is the Baiturrahman Great Mosque.

Baiturrahman High Mosque is a historic mosque in Banda Aceh. This mosque was first built during the Kingdom of Aceh Darussalam.

The Baiturrahman Great Mosque had burned down in the second Dutch aggression in April 1873.

Then the Great Mosque of Baiturrahman was rebuilt in 1879 with a single dome, which was built by the Netherlands Indian Goverment based on the disign of De-Burn.

Governor A. PH. Van Aken intiated to widen the mosque by adding two dooms in 1936.

The name of The Great Mosque was changed to the Great Mosque of Baiturrahman by the Indonesian Goverment in 1957 as well as being renovated with two additional dooms so that it than had five dooms representing the existence of Pancasila (the five basic priciples of The Republic of Indonesia) in Aceh.

In 1991-1993, the Baiturrahman Great Mosque re-extension sponsored by Governor Dr. Ibrahim Hasan. The expanded part of the mosque is the floor of the mosque where prayer, the library, the living room, the office space, the hall and the ablution site. While the yard extension includes park and parking lot and one main tower and two minarets. With the expansion, the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque has 7 domes, 4 towers, and 1 main tower.

Now in the courtyard of Baiturrahman Great Mosque there are 12 electric umbrellas to beautify Baiturrahman Great Mosque, as well as other means. The electric umbrella was built in 2015-2017 sponsored by Governor Zaini Abdullah.
