When the sun's out, we do stuff - A bit of local history

The Welsh are a rowdy bunch! So much so that Wales hold a pretty good record for castles.

"Wales has more castles per head than anywhere else in the world."

To try and keep us in check, we've had Castles built here by everyone from Norman conquers, tudor monarchs to medieval Kings. All to make sure we didn't kick up a fuss!!

Well today I took Mrs @welshstacker and 1/2pint to the castle about 1 mile away from where we live.

Welcome to LLANTRISANT castle:

Or more important what's left of it.....

The castle dates back to the mid 1200s and is thought to be built on a strong hold going even further back than that.

You can tell why this location was chosen as it sits high on the hill over looking the lower, flatter lands to the South, looking towards the coast and Cardiff.

Now for any geography buffs out there, these deposits mark the end of the extent of the last ice age and are actually the terminal marrain deposits left as the glaciers retreated. I do apologise for that bit, but Geography was the area I specialised in at university, so still being able to talk shop, some 20+years after leaving gets me all worked up.... Lol

Talk about a room with a view!!

There's not really much to do, but you can waste an hour just walking around the outside and the surrounding green. 1/2pint was a little disappointed, he was expecting dragons!!

Not only is Llantrisant famous for its castle and longbow men (AKA the Black army) , but also has a part to play in the modern day ritual of cremation. That is thanks to this guy :

And no I don't mean 1/2pint......

By the sounds of things, Dr William Price was a little bit crazy and is a topic for a whole new posts.....

So I think I've kept you long enough. I hope you enjoyed a little bit of history from the area I live. It's funny that since I've always lived here and known the stories, I'm no longer that impressed by them. Mrs W on the other hand, having never been here before, really enjoyed it. Plus letting 1/2pint run around for a while always tires him out, which is always a good thing.
