In ancient Chinese texts the land of Korea is dubbed the River and mountains embroidered on silk or the Unified East. Over the centuries, Korea has established relationships with China in various fields. Korea was known in the western world through Arab merchants who went to China through the silk route, Arab traders in the year 845 AD (Silla United) wrote In near China there is a land of abundance of gold named Silla who dazzle them.

Korea has a diverse cultural style derived from original roots formed in various arts, and dances. Chinese culture that has been imported for centuries has contributed to the formation of a social system, and norms based on Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. The result is a variety of forms of manifestation, and acculturation between native Korean culture, and a unique Chinese. From here Korea played a major role in transferring advanced cultures to Japan.

In contemporary culture, Korea is known for the Korean Wave trend generated by the spreading popularity of pop culture, Korean movies and dramas, as well as the recent video game trends and B-Boy Korea. But cultural diplomacy is the recognition of traditional Korean sports, Taekwondo, into the international Olympic Games.

In Korean the term sport is called 스포츠 (Seupocheu; sport), which has recently emerged, and was only included as a Korean vocabulary in the 21st century. But actually, the concept of sport has been used since the beginning of Korean people's history, Since prehistoric Korean society has been doing various kinds of sports activities, and traditional games. Many traditional Korean sports are still practiced like taekwondo, ssireum, archery, and taekkyeon. The basis of this traditional sport makes Korean athletes recognized in international sports such as archery, horse riding, or wrestling. Korean athletes compete in skating, table tennis, swimming, soccer, basketball, weightlifting and volleyball.
