Visiting the stunning Borobudur Temple is a wonderful thing that even becomes something you will never forget for life. If you visit Java, the tourist route will eventually lead to the city of Yogyakarta, the base for visits to the largest Buddhist temple in the world, Borobudur.

Visiting Borobudur temple is a must when visiting Yogyakarta, because Borobudur is a marvel of the world and with thousands of intricately carved engraving panels and hundreds of amazing Buddha statues, it still stands out as an impressive architectural and artistic achievement of human history. A stop in this ancient wonder is pretty much mandatory and will likely be one of the most memorable experiences of your trip.

The temple appears to have been abandoned in the 14th century, to coincide with the decline of Hindu rule and the rise of Islam in Java. Borobudur disappeared for hundreds of years, buried under dense forest and volcanic ash until finally rediscovered in 1814. After a series of restorations, the temple was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is now the most visited tourist site.

Take a tour of Borobudur from Yogyakarta

As some have already known, I'm not a big fan of tour packages, so I plan to visit the temple separately from Yogyakarta. However, I also heard warm welcome from fellow travelers about Borobudur sunrise tour.

Unfortunately, using public transportation at such hours is not an option, as I will not arrive until after sunrise. The only other affordable option is to rent a motorbike, but since Yogyakarta is 25 miles (40 km) from the temple, I really do not have the confidence to navigate the streets of a strange city at 3:30 am. So I chose to buy tickets on Borobudur sunrise tour.

If you are based in Yogyakarta, most tour agencies offer two tours to Borobudur. depart at 3:30 am and buy you access to the park before it is completely open so you can watch the sun rise from the top of the temple.

The second option departs around 5 am and takes you to the park at 6 am when the park is opened, just after sunrise. I chose the latter, because it is cheaper. This option includes minivan transport and entry to the park - it does not include guides.

By the time we arrived at the temple, there were dozens of other minivans scattered around the parking lot. Luckily, I was traveling during the quiet season, so not too many tourists that morning. There is something quiet and peaceful on the grounds and when I walk around Borobudur I am amazed.

It is so beautiful and amazing that this cultural heritage survives for over a millennium. The pyramid-shaped structure consists of nine platforms. I spent more than two hours walking slowly in each layer of the temple. Borobudur is really amazing, And believe me when I say that this is really worth the journey to Java.

What to Remember If You Are Visiting Borobudur Temple?

Bring an umbrella

Borobudur is completely outside and there is no protection from the elements. It started flowing when I left the park. Better to be safe than sorry.

Visit the museum

The museum has very interesting photographs and paintings about what the structure was when it was discovered and the work used to restore it. It also gives a good idea of the meaning and history behind the relief, sculpture, and design of the monument.

What to wear

While visiting cultural sites in Indonesia, I constantly emphasize what to wear. Given the great heat, I always wanted to wear shorts and tank tops, but because this is not culturally sensitive in a Muslim country. Those are some things you should look at when visiting Borobudur temple which is a miracle of this world.
