The laying of the first stone of the building which was carried out on October 9, 1879 (13 Shawwal 1296 Hijri) was carried out by Tengku Qadhi Malikul Adil and the construction process of the mosque began in 1881 using only one dome.
Then the mosque was named the Great Mosque of Kutaraja.
The expansion and renovation of the mosque was carried out over time due to the increasing number of congregations and the lack of facilities.
There have been several major renovations at the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque and that happened in 1935, 1975, 1981, and 1991.
During the tsunami in 2004, the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque was a silent witness to the tragedy of the disaster, even when the surrounding buildings were destroyed, this mosque was still standing strong and many people saved their lives by swimming into the mosque area. changes in the entire area of the mosque except the shape of the building itself.
