Sri Lanka is set to open its first migratory bird park and eco-tourism zone in Hanthane, Kandy. The Hanthana International Bird Park and Recreation Center is set to be inaugurated by President Ranil Wickramasinghe on February 20th, 2023, and will be open to the public from that day.

The park, spanning over 27 acres and located adjacent to the Hanthane Tea Museum premises, is home to over a hundred species of migratory birds, making it a paradise for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers. The establishment of this park is the result of a comprehensive 40-year study of non-endemic birds to Sri Lanka, which makes it a unique and important addition to the country's natural heritage. The park has been developed at a cost of Rs. 490 million rupees, making it a significant investment in Sri Lanka's ecotourism industry. In addition to serving as a sanctuary for migratory birds, the Hanthana International Bird Park and Recreation Center will also have a unit for breeding and exporting foreign birds, an educational and recreational center for school students, and a natural bird study center.
