THE SYMBOL OF NEW YORK AND THE UNITED STATES
The statue of Liberty
Installed on a tiny islet in front of New York, the Statue of Liberty is a sacred monument to the United States: France donated it to the United States in 1886. To celebrate the first centenary of the declaration of independence. The gigantic statue is composed of an iron structure designed by Gustave Eiffel (the famous engineer for the tower that bears his name) and a "skin" of 300 copper sheets. Every day it is visited by tourists who are not discouraged by the 171 steps that lead to the crown of the statue.
