Fascinating Insect: Spot Eyed Hoverfly (Eristalinus)
Hoverflies are best known as pollinators, beside bees. They also feed on both pollen and nectar for energy to produce eggs, which usually seen on flowers but also occasionally grasses and trees. Hoverflies may vary in color and size but I mostly found yellow and black hoverfly which sometimes made me confuse to identify them with wasp or bees. However, this one is included into Paragus haemorrhous family that has very small form of body, we need some time to detect their presence around. They belong to the family Syrphidae, in the order fly. Actually, it is also occasionally spotted inland. This species is known as a fast flier and mostly seen flying low over the ground and used to stop on the vegetation plants and twigs.I shot this spot eyed hoverfly (Eristalinus species) in my school garden, perching on a leaf of the white flower. The hoverflies are also called flower flies, or syrphid flies which is often seen hovering or nectaring flower. This insect is one of many species of hoverfly that mostly occur in Indonesia and is one of the few hoverflies that is considered a common garden visitor but I found this one calmly standing on the leaf in the wilderness.
