The first local plants in Nigeria was
established in 1970s, this was the time of the oil boom which was characterized by a large inflow of income as Nigeria was one of the top oil exporters in the world at large, Nigerian government entered into partnership with more advanced countries like Germany, America, and Britain which led to the establishment of 6 local assembly plants in the country.

Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited, Kaduna
Volkswagen of Nigeria Limited, Lagos,
Anambra Motor Manufacturing Limited, Enugu
Steyr Nigeria Limited, Bauchi
National Truck Manufacturers, Kano
Leyland Nigeria Limited, Ibadan.

Peugeot assembly plant in Nigeria

The Peugeot automobile assembly plant is the oldest assembly plant in Nigeria, most of these local assembly plants was established between 1970 and 1980 and some of them were producing more than 100 cars on daily basis. During this period, there was an increase in the number of people making use of cars, especially the middle class citizens.

Engineer Ezekiel Izuogu
The first car to be produced by a Nigerian was Izuogu Z-600 prototype and it was also the first vehicle to be produced by an African. Engineer Ezekiel Izuogu was a lecturer at federal polytechnic Nekede in Imo state was the first African to produce a car and he launched the car in 1997, this car caused an uproar in the Nigerian media and was boosted by the one time Nigerian chief of Staff General Oladipo Diya who was the chief of staff then.

The First Automobile Manufacturing Plant in Nigeria

The first Vehicle Manufacturing Plant in Nigeria was Innoson's Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited was established in February 2007 by A Nigerian Billoniare Innocent Chukwuma Nwala from Umudim Nnewi in Nnewi North Local government of Anambra state. The headquarter is at No 95 Owerri Road,
P.O. Box 1068, Umudim, Nnewi , Anambra state, Nigeria.

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing plant also known as IVM is nicknamed Pride Of African Road. It was commisioned by the former president of Nigeria President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and it has other branches outside Nigeria in countries like Mali, Sierra Leone and Ghana. most of the car parts are produced here in Nigeria while some are gotten from Japan, Germany and China
