Now that the days are getting shorter and the nights longer, and that is has become noticably cooler, we still don't have to feel down in despair. Even this time of year has its charm, as autumn is still showing its best side quite often. And this side is very colorful and vivid and therefore always puts me in a good mood.

Here in Japan, the trees and leaves change color a few weeks later than I was used to in Europe. The summer here often lasts well into September and ensures that the warm weather stays for quite a long time. Compared to my homeland, autumn starts a month later, but I am not going to complain about it. Well the contrary, I was enjoying the weather to the max.

But now that this time seems to be finally over and it has become much cooler the last few days, we have to be prepared that the end of the year will not be far off. But we are not in such a hurry, and until then there are still some things to experience.

Even though nature in Japan still wears its green dress, the cityscape has become noticeably more colorful. In mid-October and into November, many families with young children have a very special event on the schedule. 七五三 (Shichi-go-san) translated as "Seven-Five-Three", is an event where families who have children who are 7, 5, or 3 years old dress up their kids in a very special way and take them to the shrine to pray for their future. Traditionally, three and seven year old girls and five year old boys will be dressed in colorful and beautiful kimonos and then walk around the shrine grounds all neatly dressed up while parents and even grandparents incessantly take pictures and enjoy their wonderful offspring.

After some doubt, I got to understand the appeal of this celebration, even if I am far from succumbing to it. To see their little ones dressed so wonderfully and glamorously probably fills the heart of every parent, although at the same time it does a good job of emptying the wallet. Often the latter responsibility can be passed on to the grandparents, who seem only too happy to play the paymaster. Depending on whether you own a kimono or have to borrow one, and how many photos the professional photographer is finally allowed to shoot, you will be presented with a tidy sum in the end. 300 to 500 euros are spent quickly, and if you're lucky, you get to dress up another child at the same time. But nobody wants to be blamed for skimping on the future happiness of their own children or grandchildren. Then rather open the wallet wide open.

But as already mentioned, I have been able to discover and also feel the magic of this celebration, and for most parents and also children, this unfortunately short, but luckily very intense and colorful moment will be something very special and unique. After all, we grow up so fast and and get older quickly, but it all makes sense when we later can look back on a few photos and revel in the past.

Jetzt wo die Tage kürzer werden und die Nächte länger, und wo es auch schon merklich kühler geworden ist, muss man trotz allem nicht verzweifeln. Auch diese Jahrezeit hat ihren Reiz, denn der Herbst zeigt sich immer noch recht oft von seinen besten Seite. Und diese Seite ist sehr bunt und farbenfroh und sorgt deshalb auch bei mir immer wieder für gute Laune.

Hier bei uns in Japan färben sich die Bäume und Blätter einige Wochen später als ich es aus europäischen Breiten gewohnt war. Der Sommer zieht sich hier oft bis weit in den September hinein und sorgt dafür, dass das warme Wetter ziemlich lange anhält. So richtig Herbst wird es im Vergleich zu heimatlichen Gefilden erst einen Monat später, worüber ich mich aber auch nicht beklagen tue, sondern den Spätsommer ausgiebig genieße.

Aber da jetzt auch diese Zeit endgültig vorbei zu sein scheint und es in den letzten Tagen merklich kühler geworden ist, müssen wir uns darauf einstellen, dass das Ende des Jahres nicht mehr lange auf sich warten lassen wird. Aber ganz so eilig haben wir es dann doch nicht, denn bis dahin gibt es auch noch das ein oder andere zu erleben.

Auch wenn in Japan die Natur immer noch überwiegend ihr grünes Kleid trägt, ist es doch im Stadtbild merklich bunter geworden. Mitte Oktober bis in den November hinein, steht für viele Familien mit kleinen Kindern ein ganz besonderer Event auf dem Plan. 七五三 (Shichi-go-san) übersetzt "Sieben-Fünf-Drei", ist ein Event bei dem Familien, die Kinder haben, die 7, 5 oder 3 Jahre alt, diese ganz besonderes ankleiden und mit ihnen in den Schrein gehen, um für ihre Zukunft zu beten und zu bitten. Traditionell werden drei- und siebenjährige Mädchen und fünfjährige Jungen in farbenfrohe und wunderschöne Kimonos gesteckt werden und laufen dann ordentlich aufgebretzelt durch die Schreinanlage, während Eltern und auch Großeltern unentwegt Fotos machen und sich an ihrem wundervollen Nachwuchs erfreuen.

Nach einigem Zweifeln habe ich den Reiz dieses Festes zumindest verstanden, auch wenn ich ihm noch lange nicht erlegen bin. Die eigenen Kleinen so wundervoll und schick angezogen zu sehen, erfüllt wahrscheinlich das Herz aller Eltern, obwohl es zur selben Zeit dafür die Brieftasche ordentlich entlasten tut. Oft kann letzteres an die Großeltern weitergeleitet werden, die nur zu gerne hier den Zahlemann zu spielen scheinen. Je nachdem, ob man einen eigenen Kimono besitzt oder sich einen borgen muss, und wie viele Fotos der professionelle Fotograf letzendlich schießen darf, bekommt man am Ende eine ordentliche Summe präsentiert. 300 bis 500 Euro sind da mal schnell ausgegeben, und wenn man Glück hat, darf man zur selben Zeit noch ein weiteres Kind ausstaffieren. Aber man möchte sich ja nicht nachsagen lassen, man hätte beim Zukunftsglück der eigenen Kinder oder Enkelkinder geknausert. Dann lieber das Portmonee ganz weit aufmachen.

Aber wie schon erwähnt, habe ich die Magie dieses Festes entdecken und auch fühlen können, und für die meisten Eltern und auch Kinder wird dieser leider nur kurze, aber dafür sehr intensive, farbenfrohe Moment etwas ganz Besonderes und Einzigartiges sein. Denn wir werden doch letztendlich so schnell groß und alt, und wenn wir uns dann einiger Fotos wieder ein wenig zurückbesinnen und in der Vergangenheit schwelgen können, hat alles doch schon einen Sinn.

Three - Five - Seven, these are the magic numbers at this festival, which the boys can celebrate once and the girls twice in their life. Drei - Fünf - Sieben, das sind die magischen Zahlen bei diesem Fest, welches die Jungen einmal und die Mädchen zweimal in ihrem Leben begehen können. Aber heutzutage wird auch in Japan nicht mehr alles ganz so streng betrachtet, wer möchte kann auch seine Söhne mehrmals feiern und auch die Töchter gerne ein drittes Mal hochleben lassen. Wenn man denn einen eigenen Kimono besitzen sollte, muss der ja auch mal angezogen werden. So viele Anlässe dazu gibt es dazu nämlich nicht wirklich, die meisten Kimonos liegen leider über Jahre oder Jahrzehnte ungetragen in den Schränken herum.

Sometimes it seems to me that no two kimonos are the same, and all of them are different. In particular, this probably comes from the fact that I quite rarely get to see kimonos, because here in Japan today, very few people walk around in this wonderful, but also traditional clothing, which is not necessarily suitable for everyday use.

If you take a closer look at the different kimonos, you will discover more and more details and realize what masterpieces you have in front of your eyes. There are also kimonos for men, which of course are not so fancy and colorful. But that would be something for another post.

Manchmal kommt es mir vor, als wäre kein Kimono wie ein anderer, und alle würden sich unterscheiden. Das kommt wohl insbesondere daher, dass ich eigentlich recht selten Kimonos zu Gesicht bekomme, da hier in Japan heute die wenigsten in dieser wundervollen, aber doch auch traditionellen und nicht unbedingt alltagstauglichen Kleidung herumlaufen.

Wenn man sich die verschiedenen Kimonos genauer betrachtet, wird man immer mehr Details entdecken und feststellen, was man hier für Meisterwerke vor den Augen hat. Es gib übrigends auch Kimonos für Männer, welche natürlich nicht so verspielt und bunt daherkommen. Aber das wäre mal etwas für einen anderen Beitrag.

But not only kids in kimonos are spraying color and cheerfulness at the moment, there are some other places that come along bright and colorful. As in our city's main shrine, the basin for ritual hand cleansing, which due to the current situation has undergone a change of purpose and has been decorated and filled with flowers. Depending on the season, it shines in different colors and shapes.

Aber nicht nur Kinder in Kimonos versprühen derzeit Farbe und Frohsinn, es gibt noch einige andere Orte, die bunt und farbenfroh daherkommen. Wie bei uns im großen Schrein das Becken zur rituellen Handreinigung, welches aufgrund der aktuellen Situation zweckentfremdet mit Blumen bestückt und geschmückt wurde. Je nach Saison leuchtet es in anderen Farben und Formen.

And since we are already there at the shrine, we go for a little round and enjoy old the beautiful decorations and the playfulness. Like this family of bunnies, which I always smile at. I am just glad they are there.

Und da wir schon einmal im Schrein sind, drehen wir noch eine kleine Runde und erfreuen uns an den vielen Verspieltheiten und Dekoratione. So wie diese Hasenfamilie, der ich immer wieder von Neuem zulächel und mich freue, dass sie da sind.

Or these little emas, similar to votov images, on which you can write your wishes or hopes. Or even paint a little picture if you feel like it.

Oder diese kleinen Emas, ähnlich wie Votovbilder, auf die man seine Wünsche oder Hoffnungen schreiben kann. Oder auch ein kleines Bild malt, wenn es einem danach ist.

This demon dog watches here at all times of the year and seems to take good care of us. Again, you can notice the color red which is so often visible in shrines and temples. A very important element which often serves to keep or chase away evil.

Dieser Dämonenhund wacht hier zu jeder Jahreszeit und scheint dabei gut auf uns aufzupassen. Auch hier kann man wieder gut die so oft in Schreinen und Tempeln sichtbare Farbe Rot sehen, ein ganz wichtige Farbe, die oft dazu dient das Böse fernzuhalten oder zu vertreiben.

There was a lot of green to see on the further round through the shrine complex, and I always like to walk here. I enjoy to take the detours off the main paths, the so finely and neatly placed stones just invite me to take a spin.

Und auch wenn es auf der weiteren Runde durch die Schreinanlage viel Grün zusehen gab, laufe ich hier doch immer wieder gerne lang. Und nehme dabei auch gerne die Umwege abseits der Hauptwege, die so fein und säuberlich hier platzierten Steine laden mich einfach dazu ein.

The pond in the middle was completely overgrown with lotus plants, a great sight, which could be topped if the lotuses would all bloom. But since it is now autumn, we will have to wait quite a while for that show. Nevertheless, a very Japanese picture for me.

Der Teich in der Mitte war komplett mit Lotuspflanzen zugewachsen, ein toller Anblick, der aber bestimmt noch getopt werden kann, wenn die Lotusse alle blühen würden. Aber da es jetzt ja nun Herbst ist, werden wir darauf noch eine ganze Weile warten müssen. Trotzdem, ein sehr japanische Bild für mich.

When sky plays along and reveals its blue and shining side, there is also some color from above. You just have to stop and look up. Together with the Tori Gate, which can be found at the entrances to the shrine, it often offers a great picture, and I can then only hardly resist to pull out the camera. But that's why I have all my great pictures that I always like to share with you.

That way I can deepen my impressions and save them for later. All the many memories and pictures in our head are an important part of our journey through this life, and it is so important to store them well.

Aber Farbe gibt es auch manchmal von oben, wenn der Himmel mitspielt und sich von seiner blauen und strahlenden Seite zeigt. Man muss nur stehen bleiben und nach oben sehen. Zusammen mit dem Tori-Tor, welches an den Eingängen zum Schrein zu finden ist, bietet sich auch hier oft ein ganz tolles Bild, und ich kann dann immer nur schwer widerstehen, die Kamera zu zücken. Aber deshalb habe ich ja auch die vielen tollen Bilder, die ich immer wieder gerne mit euch teile.

So kann ich auch selber noch einmal meine Eindrücke vertiefen und für später abspeichern. Denn die vielen Erinnerungen und Bilder in unserem Kopf sind ein wichtiger Teil unserer Reise durch dieses Leben.
