What is Traffic?

Being a resident of the capital Dhaka I have to deal every day with this word Traffic. Traffic is a constant and excruciating pain in my city. The people of the villages are rushing to this capital in search of better livelihood, as a result of which the population is increasing day by day beyond the carrying capacity of this city.

Day by day, as the population increases in the country, the traffic on the road or highway is increasing due to which this traffic jam is created. The streets of the capital are becoming infected day by day like a disease. A numerous number of vehicles, lack of regulation, inefficiency and ignorance of people are the main reasons for traffic jams in city life.

How it affects in our human life?

Traffic badly affects in every side of our lives. For every country, this is a major disadvantage. Traffic is seriously disrupting our lives in precious time, manpower, energy resources, and environmental pollution.

Despite the various developmental steps taken by the government in our country unfortunately we are not getting rid of this suffering.

Dhaka has been ranked as the fifth worst city in the world in 2023 in terms of traffic in the global database Numbeo's Traffic Index by City 2023.

In the world in terms of traffic in 2023 our Dhaka city has been ranked as the fifth worst city. Instead of improving the traffic situation, it is deteriorating gradually which is an alarming thing for all the citizens.

A 2018 study by BUET's Accident Research Institute found that traffic jams have taken 5 million working hours from our lives and cost our economy Rs 37,000 crore. Besides, every year around 6-10% of our country's GDP is lost due to this traffic chaos.

Causes of Traffic jam

There are many reasons for this public suffering. Among those some of the major points are discussed in below –

1. Pressure of Overpopulation – Congestion is at the root of the growing population. For being employed people are increasingly moving towards cities. Along with the increase in population, there is also an increase in the number of vehicles which has created road obstructions.

2. Underdeveloped Infrastructure – The traffic problem is more massive due to various infrastructural deficiencies. Narrow broken roads, waterlogged roads, over-the-road shops, and a lack of traffic police also contribute to this misery.

3. Unregulated Transport - Another major cause of road congestion is the mismanagement of public transport. A segment of the population travels by their own transport where the travelers are a maximum of 4-5 people sometimes it can be only one or two. On the other hand in public transport, the population is a minimum of 50-60 people. Moreover, many unlicensed vehicles, driven by unskilled drivers create traffic jams.

4. Unplanned urbanization – Another reason for congestion in cities unplanned construction of various buildings and their appropriate vehicle capacity. Various multi-stored buildings are constructed, but their parking is not adequate, as a result of which many people park their cars randomly on the road and disturb the movement of people. Also, violation of traffic laws, unlicensed and reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals are among the causes of traffic jams.

5. Inattention to traffic rules - Issuing driving licenses to various miscreants for money, not paying fines or punishing them for disobeying traffic rules but instead letting them off with bribes by officials on duty, plying the roads without permits, reckless driving causing traffic jams and also it becomes causing threats to many lives.

How to solve the Traffic jam?

Day by day the traffic jams have made our daily life much more annoying and unbearable. "Traffic jam" is the first thing that comes to our mind when we think of leaving home, so we all have to try to solve this problem.

1. Comfortable and advanced public transport - Unlicensed, expired vehicles should be canceled and public transport with advanced technology should be arranged in all parts of the village or city. The private vehicles should be reduced from the road. Drivers are responsible for getting everyone to their destination at low cost and in a short time. All classes of people should be encouraged to use public transport.

2. Sustainable and improved road construction - Every city should build and repair roads with advanced technology. Extension of each road following prescribed dimensions, provision of overpasses or underpasses, and repair of roads should be done expeditiously and by experienced personnel. Every building should have its own parking area and no one should use the road for their personal.

3. Education and awareness creation among the people - People should be made aware through various advertisements and seminars about the unwanted suffering that traffic congestion has created in our lives and environment. Conducting transport by responsible drivers, obeying traffic rules, encouraging all citizens to cycle or walk instead of using transport to reach their destinations.

4. Population control and employment generation - We need to make everyone aware of population control in our country. In addition to the provision of employment in their respective areas, developmental employment should be provided to others so that no one is interested in this city life.

Conclusion

Finally, we can say that the solution to the traffic problem is not only for the government or the people, it is the suffering of all of us, so we all have to be aware and solve this problem. All the employees under this department of the government should always be determined to play a significant role in the work,

transport expert advice should be taken and should make a concern team who will apply modern technology and create new ideas for the formation of road construction for our better transportation. Besides, our people should strive to build a traffic-free city by following all the rules provided by the government.
