Talking about the environment, the environment can be defined as a place or surroundings where animals, human beings, and plants live. Our environment is the natural world, which includes the forests, the built environment like the houses, roads and cities, as well as the water bodies like oceans and rivers.
Our environment can be both natural and artificial. We have the natural environment that encompasses the thing made by our Creator and the artificial environment, which includes the things made by man.
How do our surroundings impact our well-being?
What an interesting question! Our surroundings, which are where we live, can have great impacts on our behaviours and our well-being. There are some environments which we live in which improve our life positively both mental and physical and there are also some environment which we lives in that affect us negatively.
People living in an air polluted environment have a higher risk of contacting respiratory tract infections, while those who live in an environment that is not air polluted will not suffer from that disease.
Apart from air pollution, living in an environment that is polluted can cause people some kind of sleeplessness, high blood pressure, heart diseases and stress while someone who lived in a place that is not polluted with noise may not suffer from such.
Noise pollution, air pollution and others are part of our environment and they can affect us negatively showing that our environment have great impact on us.
What are some ways pollution, like air or water pollution, can affect our health?
Like every other pollution, air and what pollution can have a very serious effect and our health and overall body wellness.
As I mentioned earlier, air pollution can cause serious health problems like respiratory tract infections. Examples of such are asthma, lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases which most times result in stroke and heart diseases.
Water pollution also has some negative effects on our health.
Diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, and other skin diseases like rashes are caused by water pollution. Air and water pollution can cause a lot of damage to the unborn children, like birth defects and developmental and neurological disorders. Pollution can have some serious effects on our health so, it of great importance to take good care of ourselves by making sure our source of water is not polluted and avoid breathing polluted air.
What are some simple actions you take every day to promote environmental health?
There are a good number of simple task or action that can be taken by us to promote our environment.
Some of them are.
- By reducing the way we use fossil fuels, like coal and gasoline.
- By planting trees that can absorb carbondioxide from the air, which will help to purify the air we breathe.
- By not pouring chemicals and other pollutants down to our source of water because this will contermant the water we drink.
- By picking up any litter we see on the ground.
- By not playing or listening to loud music because this can affect our ear drum and pollute the environment with noise.
- By reducing the amount of waste that goes to landfills.

How can education and awareness play a role in promoting environmental health?
The two most important keys to promoting environmental health are education and awareness.
People really need to understand the impact of their actions on the environment through education and awareness because without that, they won't be able to distinguish right from wrong. They really need to take need simple steps to make a difference in the environment they live in. They should be enlightened about bigger environmental issues that we're facing, like climatic change and biodiversity loss. Without education and awareness, people will not be inspired to make a difference, and this difference can lead to lasting change.
