Steem Community Support for September: Application By STEEM NIGERIA Community

A big thank you to the Steemit team for this great opportunity to have a support for the sustainability of our great community: STEEM NIGERIA. I am @greatness96 and with a team of moderators in our community, we seek the support of Steemit team through this application.

Community Purpose
The STEEM NIGERIA community was created originally for the purpose of encouraging the engagement of Nigerians on the Steemit platform. the idea was deliberated upon by like minds like our former Steem Africa admin, @beautichicks, who with other Steemians saw the need for Nigerians to have a community of their own on Steem.

To state the purpose clearly, let’s look at it as an outline.
1.To encourage Nigerian writers from all fields and give them an audience by attracting readers to their articles.
2.To help students and young school graduates in Nigeria learn how to blog. We discovered that most of our potential great writers do not have a platform to start with. Thus, we brought them here with the hope that they will learn and gather confidence to face the large audience as they grow.
3.To give Nigerians the opportunity to earn passive income through writing original content. This is where the support becomes expedient because we have great talents here in Nigeria.
4.To improve recruitment and sustenance of Steem bloggers in Nigeria. We believe that when writers in Nigeria have a common community they belong to, it will give them a sense of belonging and encourage others to signup to Steemit platform as we spread the good news about the platform.
5.To increase a healthy writing competition that covers all areas of life in Nigeria. Most of our contest topics are topics that are peculiar to the average Nigerian. Talking about it through contest entries helps us to learn more, especially when personal experiences are shared. Some of the contests to look back on, for reference purposes are:

Community Team
The steem Nigeria community has her admin as our able @greatness96 and a set of competent moderators which usernames are; @samsuccess , @hopeofgod, @prechyrukky, @lovveday, @idyeyo, and @orracle.
Fortunately for the community, the moderators all came from Nigeria and they speak English in general
The team members are not directly paid in any way but I can boldly say that the team members are rewarded by the opportunity to organize a contest and it gets a sure upvote. Although we the moderator are putting ideas in place for the growth of the community. All things will fall into place soon!

The community cannot function without an active team, in this regard we are proud to say both Admins and the moderators as well as a great number of members are very active on the platform. The moderators have also made the number of comments on a post/article as part of the criteria for selecting contest winners, this has increased comments on the community posts. Steem Nigeria is a community under continuous development, growth and has experienced an influx of newbies on a daily basis, it is on this note that the moderators are currently setting up a newbie guide, this will help welcome and guide newcomers stating the rules being observed by Steemit and the need to be part of various communities on steemit.

For better interaction among Admins and Moderators, the team has put in place groups on social media platforms such as whatapps, telegrams, and discord (https://discord.gg/wpAv7sKd) where discussions are made on how to move the community to the next level. Everyone is just simply engaged in doing something to make this community envy steemit.
Finally, the community engages in the weekly contest in which a juicy award is given to the first 3 winners selected. We also use this medium to invite other communities to be a part of @STEEMNIGERIA.

Community Curation Account
Our community curation account is @teamg-nigeria. It is also our official account for posting updates on the community. The account is currently being built upon to ensure it has enough steem power to curate the posts on the community.

Each official member of the community delegate 20% of their post earning to the curation account. The idea was initiated by one of our moderators @hopeofgod and the announcement was made HERE.

So far, we have gotten over 50 steem from the donations and in a couple of months and with support from steemit team we hope to build a fat account that can give tangible support to the community in terms of curation.

Plagiarism & Abuse
As a way of avoiding plagiarism and abuse, the moderators check each article submitted in the community. To do this effectively, they subject the posts to check using Plagiarism Detector Tool.

When a compromised article is detected, the moderator comment on it to ensure that it does not get any support. Consistent violation by the same user leads to a mute from the community.

Engagement & Commenting

STEEM NIGERIA community is like a family. Great articles get comments from fellow community members. We are always encouraging engagements by members, especially on contest posts and entries. This is one area we are still improving upon, as the community grows bigger.

Plans & Updates
Although we have updated our community engagement by mandating every member to give back to the community, our plans are as follows:

1.Recruiting more people into steemit through the umbrella of STEEM NIGERIA.
2.Running weekly lectures on Markdown for new and existing community members. The moderators will take turns to do this. We believe this will help members to post great quality and attractive content.
3.Giving updates of the latest Steemit initiatives to the community. Most members are not usually up to date. We plan to give them updates, especially with our Whatsapp group. With more members coming in, we will be using the discord server and Telegram group to accommodate more members.
4.Creating a more robust weekly contest. This will also encourage more engagement in the community.

Promotion
We have everything it takes to promote Steemit through the use of other social media and offline campaigns. The admin of the community, @greatness96 has so much experience in this area, as he has been a Steemit promoter for years. With his assistance, STEEM NIGERIA community is doing great in the area of promotion.

Conclusion
The support for our community is all we need to ensure sustainability. As we continue working on standing on our feet, we believe that the community is urgently in need of this support. Within one month, we can gather something tangible on the community curation account through weekly updates and members’ support.

We are a growing community, thus we don’t have the numerous features to compete effectively with larger communities, but with this support, we give ourselves a three months target to come mainstream.
