SEC-S17W3: "National Festival"

Happy festivities, fellow Steemians! Allow me to share the wonderful experience of our National festival here in the Philippines.

The Philippines boasts an impressive array of 42,000 festivals, ranging from major to minor celebrations, earning it the esteemed title of the 'Capital of the World's Festivities'. However, the crown jewel of our festivals is the Sinulog Festival, widely acclaimed as the grandest celebration in the Philippines. Its origins trace back to the historic victory of Lapu-Lapu over the Spanish forces under Magellan's command in 1521. Since then, we have commemorated this triumph annually with fervent festivities held in the heart of the Queen City of the South, Cebu City.

We honor our revered savior, Señor Santo Niño, through elaborate presentations during the Sinulog Festival. Some devotees express their gratitude by preparing sumptuous feasts reminiscent of a grand fiesta. Meanwhile, a highlight of the festivities is the highly anticipated dance competition, where participants showcase their talents in sync with the pulsating rhythm of the 'Sinulog' theme. The Sinulog dance, resembling a rhythmic wave with two steps forward and one step back, captivates audiences with its grace and energy. Participants are meticulously judged based on various criteria, including costume design, choreography, backdrops, props, and music composition. With over a hundred contestants vying for the coveted title, the stakes are high, with the ultimate prize standing at an impressive 3 million pesos. This annual spectacle continues to draw throngs of spectators, each year celebrating the vibrant spirit and cultural richness of the Sinulog Festival. There are no strict guidelines or regulations dictating how our National festival should be celebrated.

Every year, the Sinulog Parade draws an astounding crowd of over 3 million participants, turning the streets into a vibrant sea of revelers. Cebu welcomes visitors from all corners of the globe with open arms, and we are truly honored to host them. While there's no strict dress code, the majority don outfits adorned with Sinulog motifs, adding to the festive atmosphere. To ensure seamless coordination, participants in the presentations often don matching shirts and pants, facilitating easy recognition amidst the bustling throngs. Dancers pay homage to our ancient heritage by donning traditional tribal costumes, a symbol of reverence for our ancestors. As the focal point of regal splendor, the Festival Queen dazzles in an opulent ensemble, embodying grace and majesty as she cradles the revered statue of Santo Niño. And no Sinulog feast is complete without the iconic lechon, a culinary masterpiece that reigns as the quintessential dish of Cebu. Prepared by roasting a whole seasoned pig over glowing embers, the succulent lechon holds a cherished place in the hearts and palates of Filipinos, embodying the essence of culinary delight and communal celebration.

My most cherished memory of our National festival dates back to 2019, when I had the privilege of participating in the Sinulog festival as a propsman. Despite the challenges of hunger and fatigue, the experience was profoundly rewarding, knowing that our efforts were dedicated to honoring Santo Niño. I learned that our barangay captain allocated a substantial sum, a million pesos, for costumes, backdrops, choreography, and other essentials. While we clinched 7th place in the National contest, earning a prize of 300,000 pesos, our triumph in the local contest, securing the championship title and a 1 million peso prize, truly validated our hard work and dedication. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: that genuine intentions, rooted in the depths of our hearts, inevitably yield rewards. It underscores the profound impact of trusting in our own capabilities. Considering the fierce competition in the National contest, boasting over a hundred participants, our 7th-place finish was commendable. And in the local contest, where we faced more than 10 contenders, emerging as champions was an achievement we'll forever cherish.
