Achievement 2 - Task: Basic Security on Steem by @simplify

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago

Hi everyone. In this article, I will try to inform you about newcomers to understand the basic security principles of the platform and the usage of Steem wallet. These will help us understand the general functioning of the platform and keep our accounts secure.

I will try to explain all this information clearly and simply so that it can be a good resource for newcomers who will join us later. Let’s jump in.

Have you retrieve all your keys on steemit?

Yes. I have all of my keys in a pdf document. I have screenshots in my flash drive. I also handwritten them in my notebook to avoid problems in case of any hardware failure.

Do you know each of these key functions and restrictions?

There are four different keys and they are used to perform different operations. Now I will explain to you the functions of these keys.

  • Posting Key:

The posting key is the key that allows us to do some basic operations on Steemit. We can use Posting Key to post, comment, edit, vote, resteem, and follow or mute other accounts. It is always a good choice to use your Posting Key when logging into Steemit if you are not going to do something that requires you to use other keys. Even if someone gets hold of your Posting Key, they won't be able to make transactions on your account.

  • Active Key:

Active Key allows you to take financial actions on your account like transferring funds, powering up/down transactions, converting Steem Dollars or placing a market order. You can also vote for witnesses and update profile details and avatar with your Active Key.

  • Owner Key:

The owner key is the most important key. Because with your Owner Key, you can change all your keys including itself. It's only used to recover a compromised account. Storing it offline makes sense. You should only use the owner key when necessary.

  • Memo Key:

Memo Key allows us to encrypt and decrypt memos while transferring funds. We can use the pound/# sign before it.

How do you plan to keep your master password?

The password that should only be used in the account recovery process after registering and receiving the keys. The password that should only be used in the account recovery process after registering and receiving the keys. That's why I kept it offline in written form.

Do you know how to transfer your steem token to another steem user account?

Transferring steem to another user is a simple process.

You can write a description as Memo to clarify the purpose of transaction. If you are sure that the information is correct, you can now confirm this transaction. Remember that your Active Key is required to complete the transaction.

Do you know how to power up your STEEM?

Here’s another simple action. Let’s do it.

  • Follow the path Wallet > Balances.
  • Click on your Steem Balance and select Power Up.
