“All that glisters is not gold”

I cannot help but wonder what Shakespeare had in mind when he wrote these words.
What were his thoughts?
What happened in his life for him to write this?
What would he say if he had to experience the City of Gold?

Dubai!

In 2019, I, together with my stepson, visited Dubai, and for the first time in my life, I experienced the words, “If you build it, they will come.”

For those of you who don’t know, this is how Dubai became the City of Gold, through real estate. They invited wealthy individuals in the region, notably the royal families of other emirates and Arab countries, to make substantial real estate investments.

During our drive from the airport to our hotel, I was in awe of the skyscrapers that reached the sky, the "gold,” and… the reflections.
I decided that it was exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to capture the reflections of this amazing city in some of my photos, which I gladly share with you today.

In my first three photos, I captured the reflections of the buildings at different times to see how they would change. These photos were taken at the hotel where we were staying.

I think I’ve managed to capture the reflection of these buildings, leaving the viewer pondering what is real and what is not.

In search of a photo that would portray “the gold of the city,” I was so lucky to capture the following photo: The building that reflects as a gold building was actually a white building. One step forward or back, and it was reflecting its true color.

A visit to Dubai is not a visit if you have not been to the top of the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa. A building that is nearly three times the height of the Eiffel Tower, with the observation deck on floors 124 and 125.

We went there at night because we wanted to see the city clothed in gold. It took us exactly 60 seconds to reach the observation deck from the time the door of the lift closed until it opened. Traveling at 10 meters per second is an amazing experience and only the beginning of what is to come. Spectacular, breathtaking, magnificent, you name it.

This time, I experienced taking images of the reflection of my stepson's image in one of the +/- 26,000 hand-cut glass panels holding part of the city in his hands.

Now I am back at the statement of Shakespeare: “All that glisters is not gold.”

He was right after all! There are times that even Dubai is not dressed in gold. This I managed to show by taking a photo through the window of the taxi we were driving in on our last day in this amazing city. Even the majestic Burj Khalifa shows parts almost “disappearing.”

Do you think all that glitter is gold?

Thank you!

Shakespeare's saying All that glitters is not gold certainly resonates deeply when placed alongside the opulent backdrop of Dubai.

His words are a reflection on the nature of appearances versus reality, a theme that seems aptly reflected through your own experiences and the stunning photos you took in Dubai. Also the way you used photography to explore the literal and metaphorical reflections within the city is very profound. You seem to have not only captured the physical beauty of the city but also engaged with the deeper fantasies it offers.

Thank you for giving your thoughts and experiences. It adds a wonderful layer to understanding Shakespeare's words and Dubai's sparkling facade.

Thank you for the visit and the engagement! ☕

How glad am I that Shakespaere didn't become the actor he so wanted to be. In his beautiful words and sayings, the English language lives on, not only in our day-to-day lives but also through our photography.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful reflection! I agree with you that it's fascinating how Shakespeare's legacy extends even into photography illustrating the timeless nature of his influence. His words indeed shape our perceptions and artistic expressions in myriad ways.

My birth day is on 23 April, the same us Shakespeare.
It is always a reminder for me why I love the language. (•ิ‿•ิ)

“All that glisters is not gold”

Wow, you've opened my eyes. I didn't know Shakespeare said that. I thought it was a folk saying, the wisdom of older generations.

For those of you who don’t know, this is how Dubai became the City of Gold, through real estate.

I would say that initially oil made Dubai a golden city.

Have you been to Abu Dhabi?
I visited these 2 cities last Christmas! It was like a fairy tale!

Like they say, we are never too old to learn. (•ิ‿•ิ)
I remember reading a post of yours about Dubai. It is indeed an experience and a half to visit Dubai.

The oil and, of course, gold were there, but they did nothing to clad Dubai in gold. It was only when Dubai became known as a financial hub and foreigners were invited to buy property due to the freehold property policy that Dubai truly started to grow, with each new building getting bigger and better with gold trimmings and more.

As for Abu Dhabi, nope, I haven't been there, but I will go back, and this time I want to stay for at least two weeks.

I think that you will be able to visit there again and for a longer time.

Nice one and a wonderful explanation! I have been there a few times and fortunately one of my friend's friend has an apartment in Burj Khalifa and I had an opportunity to spend in his 68th floor apartment. Trust me I was filled with a kind of inferiority complex. And you know what? That man owes several thousand dollars to my friend. So you're right, everything that glitters is not gold.My best wishes in this contest!

Oh wow!!! What an amazing experience it must have been to actually visit one of the apartments!
I had the opportunity to go and take a look at one of the apartments, but we ran out of time.

It makes me so cross when I read about stories like your friends, as it happened to us more than once in our lives. Yet, we still don't learn our lesson. You can call us suckers for punishment when it comes to helping people.

Awh! Thank you for the nice compliment and the good luck wishes! ☕

Hello, my friend!
How nice to see a visit from you! Not to mention the great comment.
It is amazing what one can do with a camera, or, should I rather say, a phone with a camera function. (•ิ‿•ิ)
You can lead the eye to where you want it to go, especially if you make use of reflections.

Okay, I must admit, sometimes you also need to be at the right place at the right time.

Thank you for enjoying my post! ˙✧˖°📸⋆。˚

Yes! Who can forget that car "flying" through the building? Not me. (•ิ‿•ิ)
Was it not the movie after the one in which Brian died?
Dubai is a city that says, "This is me; capture me."
What they have done there is truly amazing.

Thank you for the visit! ☕
