Before you get to Meteora

Cliffs in the valley

Continuation of the story of how I got to Meteora.

When the pass was left behind and the road began to acquire a feeling of asphalt, the mood improved markedly. It was evident that the snake of the road descends down into the valley and leads to the very distance. The sun was shining.

And then I saw a turtle crawling in front of me across the road. Had to stop and skip. For me, a person from a country where only a cat or dog can cross the road - a turtle is a huge exotic.

When we got out into the valley, I noticed dark rocks in the distance. This, it seems, is my very Meteors.

But so far I’m not at all sure of this, since I ended up in this place for the first time in my life.

I drove along an excellent road towards the Meteors and looked around with wide eyes. Beautiful green field, yellow flowers, blue sky. It looked just awesome.

In the distance, I saw a large group of rocks. Under them were visible the red roofs of the city. It seems that this was our goal.

Even from a distance, the Meteors seemed interesting. Like the teeth of an ancient monster, the rocks stuck out on level ground. According to geologists, these rocks were once the bottom of the sea and the water whetted these stones and turned them into smooth rounded boulders.

The stones remained and the sandy bottom fell and these rocks rose high into the sky.

On the tops of these rocks, the first Christians, fleeing persecution, founded monasteries. Climbing these stones was difficult. This provided security to the inhabitants of the monasteries.

Today these monasteries are a real Mecca for tourists. But I will talk about these monasteries later.
