Roma Aeterna, Tbilisi National Gallery - Tbilisi Nomad (@steem-beat)

Roma Aeterna: Masterpieces of Roman Sculpture was an exhibition at the Tbilisi National Gallery I visited in February. The entry price was more than reasonable, and I also had the privilege of being able to take photographs on my phone. Which is not usual for many museums and similar exhibitions in Europe and elsewhere.

There was over 30 exhibits featuring a selection of different time periods from the history of the ‘Eternal City’ the oldest sculpture was from around 100 AD, after the fall of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Principate, otherwise known as the Roman Empire.

From there, we were taken through the arc of Italian history up until around the 1700s. Many of the later exhibits were commissioned by influential figures of the Catholic Church, so obviously they took on a more Christian religious theme. But I really enjoyed the selection on display.

The Tbilisi National Gallery itself is open all year round, they often have special exhibits like Roma Aeterna but the price of admission also covers entry to the whole gallery. I spent a good few hours perusing the exhibits of Georgian artists on display, I’ll save those pictures for another post!
