The Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) is a mountain in the Mont Blanc massif in the French Alps.

It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1035m to 3842m.

The cable car to the summit, the Téléphérique de l’Aiguille du Midi, was built in 1955 and held the title of the world’s highest cable car for about two decades.

It travels from Chamonix to the top of the Aiguille du Midi – an altitude gain of over 2,800 m – in 20 minutes.

The Aiguille summit contains a panoramic viewing platform, a cafe and a gift shop.

The Vallée Blanche ski run begins here, and the nearby Cosmiques Refuge is the starting point for one of the routes to the Mont Blanc summit.

From the Aiguille another cable car (summer months only) crosses the Glacier de Geant to Point Helbronner (3,452 m) at the Italian side of the Mont Blanc Massif.

Point Helbronner is served with a cable car from La Palud, a village near Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley (Italy).

The station of the Aiguille du Midi has several terraces where visitors can take in the spectacular views of the French, Swiss and Italian Alps.

On a clear day, it is possible to see the Matterhorn (4478m), the Monte Rosa (4634m) and the Grand Combin (4314m).

Often, during the summer season, it is possible to spot climbers on their way up this face towards the summit of the Aiguille du Midi.

Over time, the Aiguille du Midi has been transformed into a real human hive dedicated to tourism. It has been pierced by a tunnel network and has various services, some dedicated to accommodation facilities.

On the northern summit, the arrival and departure of the cable car, above the 3842 restaurant (3842 meters above sea level is the peak of the Aiguille du Midi) second highest restaurant in Europe (behind the Little Matterhorn in Zermatt), and also above the Chamonix terrace.

Then there is a coffee shop, croque - minute and in the background, the Aravis terrace. From the north summit, the entrance door gives access to the galleries of the central peak, leads to the ice gallery and the Mont Blanc terrace.

You then enter through these tunnels for the exit to the NE ridge and the Vallée Blanche and on the other to the cable car of the Glaciers.

The lift gives access to the terrace located on the top (central peak, also called the southern peak), at the foot of the telecommunications tower.

Since the end of 2013 there is also the so-called "Step into the void", a glass and steel overhanging parallepipid construction from which one has the sensation of being suspended in the void. The attraction is included in the price of the cable car ride.
