Street to the places of the cliche. Part 3

in WORLD OF XPILAR20 days ago

It is said that street photography grew out of reportage – "true", without the intervention of editing, without concept and without any intention. But I don't consider reportage photography to be the most honest genre, street photography is more honest.

A reportage most often has some kind of creative task, subtext or theme.

And based on this, the picture is built.

In simple words, if you need to reflect an event, then the whole plot will be built through the prism of the event.

If dandelions bloom, then the whole storyline will be realized through this flower, through the yellow color, through the interaction of people with the dandelion.

But street photography is the most honest genre, as far as one can talk about it at all.

In the street, only the prism of human perception, his vision and view of the world works.

There can be no staging or editing in street photography.

You show the world as it is at a given time.

And now let's take this vision of the world as it is now without reference to anything, without a theme, without editing and staging and transfer it to other genres!

That's what I've been trying to convey all this time....this frequency.

You can shoot in any genre on this frequency.

Everyone is trying to embellish the landscape or make the portrait even more beautiful with the help of retouching.

And if we are on the frequency of the street, then we have no right to embellish anything.

It turns out that if the landscape is not beautiful, then there is no point in photographing it, and if it is beautiful, then there is no need to embellish it.

That is, Zen in photography – to take it off right away so that you don't process it later and everything is beautiful – is the frequency of street photography!?

That's why I stopped stitching panoramas, removing wires, applying another layer to the sky...

Reportage photography, as well as frequency, is very close to the street in terms of vibration and design, but it is distinguished by the presence of a goal.

Apart from this, there is such a definition as documentary photography, which is now considered a conceptual project. I think this is a wrong judgment, since a document is a dry fact, and a concept or project is already a goal and intent, which is already contrary to documentation. But we'll talk about that later.

Sort:

I had never really thought about it to that depth, but definitely do agree with you. Even if your intention is to keep an open mind and capture "all sorts" - if your mind knows that there is some kind of agenda or topic at hand... it will even unconsciously gravitate to that level of focus.

Sort of like when you buy a specific brand of car for the first time. Suddenly, you will start to notice that type of car on the road - making it seem as if there are an unusually high number of them, when in fact nothing at all has changed except the attention your mind gave the matter :D

About the car right to the point!
