The Hermanus FynArts Festival
My birthday may fall in one of the coldest and probably wettest months of the year, but since moving out to Country Bumpkin Land, I am treated with an annual distraction from the cold which is right up my alley!
Yes, Cape Town is a city filled with creatives, no doubt - but it is very much a “city vibe” and there is always so much going on everywhere that you almost don’t know where to start. The Overberg region is different in that respect because it is a lot more “country”.
I have also noticed over the years that the really “creative” creatives (aka the crazies like me) lol, tend to move away from the cities eventually… and guess where they move to… haha! There is definitely truth in that statement, I swear!
Hermanus, which is pretty much a four wheel hop, skip and jump away from where I live, is very much an ARTS driven little tourist town! There is no shortage of creativity going on there and once a year, people from all over the world gravitate to this neck of the woods to enjoy the ten day long FynArts Festival… which yes, starts the day after my birthday - yay!
The festival was launched in 2013 to try and liven up the quieter Winter months by creating an art event that would encourage tourists to stay in this little tourist town for more than one day or night.
Over the years, it has evolved into a creative festival that everyone looks forward to - so now it is not so much focused on the increase in tourism (that happens anyway) but rather on the arts themselves!
It is not an event which takes place in one singular location. It is dotted all around the town - in restaurants, galleries, halls, outdoors etc. and there really is all sorts. You can attend exhibitions, talks, concerts, classes, demonstrations, workshops, films - you name it - and it is all geared around the creative arts!
So, in a nutshell - it is “Jaynie Heaven”! Most years I have only managed to get to one or two things, but this year - I really want to make an effort to get stuck into all the awesomeness that will be on offer… so, if anyone wants to know what I want for my birthday… it is tickets to FynArts events or spending money haha!!! - Oh, that and POTS… I need POTS now, lol!
One of the many things I love about living out this side of the world is all the crazy creatives. I find that surrounding myself around such individuals as well as the spaces and places in which they frequent… uplifts and inspires me! Definitely my kind of energy!
Strolling through charming streets adorned with colourful art installations, sipping on a glass of local wine (likely to end up being a bottle), and soaking in the creative energy all around! Sounds dreamy, doesn't it? Yip, that's exactly what it is – a magical atmosphere that will leave you feeling inspired and full of colourful artsy vibes!
But, in all honesty… I think the best part of all is the sense of community that permeates the festival. There's something truly special about coming together with people from all walks of life to celebrate art, culture, and creativity. Whether you're chatting with fellow art enthusiasts or sharing a laugh with local artists - doesn’t matter, its just AWESOME! I can't wait to celebrate my birthday in oodles of creative style this year :D
