El mayor desafío de la red que recoge basura es que debe estar perfectamente alineada con el objetivo. The biggest challenge for the garbage collection network is that it must be perfectly aligned with the target.

Casquillos vacíos de cohetes, enormes satélites muertos, pedazos de vidrio y pequeñísimas cascaritas de pintura están flotando en el espacio, son parte de un virtual "vertedero" compuesto de más de 7.000 toneladas de basura espacial. Esa es la cantidad de objetos que han sido desechados desde el inicio de la era espacial.

Empty rocket shells, huge dead satellites, pieces of glass and tiny paint chips are floating in space, they are part of a virtual "landfill" made up of more than 7,000 tons of space debris. That is the number of objects that have been discarded since the beginning of the space age.

The garbage collection technologies to be tested are based on surprisingly simple principles.

Una es una red espacial, similar a una red de pesca que será lanzada al espacio para agarrar la basura. Una vez capturados, los desechos serán arrastrados por una nave, como un camión de remolque, y devueltos a la tierra.

One is a space net, similar to a fishing net that will be thrown into space to catch trash. Once captured, the debris will be hauled by a ship, such as a tow truck, and returned to land.

El calor que se produce al reingresar a la atmósfera quemará la basura, mientras que los trozos que no puedan desintegrarse completamente podrán ser guiados para un amarizaje controlado en el océano Pacífico.

The heat produced by re-entering the atmosphere will burn the garbage, while the pieces that cannot fully disintegrate can be guided to a controlled landings in the Pacific Ocean.

Otros de los sistemas cuenta con una vela plateada que parece una cometa. Está hecha de una membrana ultradelgada. Funciona como la vela de un barco pero está impulsada por fotones emitidos por el Sol.

Other systems have a silver sail that looks like a kite. It is made of an ultra-thin membrane. It works like a ship's sail but is powered by photons emitted by the Sun.

Su misión es halar y arrastrar la basura fuera de su órbita, para caer en espiral hacia la atmósfera terrestre.

Its mission is to pull and drag the garbage out of its orbit, to spiral down into the Earth's atmosphere.
